Dear professional BIAB user,

I've just installed BIAB2013 on my PC and had a quick look over the different menu options.
In the style selection dropdown one can choose out of hundreds of different styles.
Is there somehow a quick way to find a proper style for any song (eg.Orange Blossom Special, Bitter they are ...etc.), or how is it done by you ?

Any tips and tricks are appreciated!

Welcome to the forum.

Yes, there is a quick way. In the upper left of the Style dialog box, there is a place marked 'Filter By' to enter text and press the Filter button. You can enter the name of a popular song and/or an artist, or a genre, and the list will be reduced substantially.

Thanks for the answer Matt!

I've tried the above mentioned but it returns more or less nothing.
Any other suggestion?

You say you got "more or less nothing". Did you get some results ("more nothing") or no results ("less nothing")?

I'm not familiar with the songs you mention. Perhaps BIAB isn't either?

What musical genre is that?

>>> Is there somehow a quick way to find a proper style for any song (eg.Orange Blossom Special, Bitter they are ...etc.), or how is it done by you ?

Yes. Use the "Band Button" (Main toolbar, 8th from the left)

That shows you just a menu of styles that are all RealTracks, and are considered (by us) to be the best choices for popular genres. If you pick a style, the style loads in. If you want to hear a demo, then press the Band Button again, and choose the menu option -"Load Song Demo for Current Style"

There is a short video showing that here ... http://screencast.com/t/e928pfybDV

On the video:

1. Band Button used to pick a bluegrass style
2. Band Button used to load a song demo for that style
3. Change the chords a bit
4. Then we add a fiddle Soloist to the Melody track, by choosing the new option (in BB 2013) to pick from best soloists.

Have Fun!

Try - Style *C-RICKY for Orange Blossom Special.
Have fun - Tinker with Real Tracks to replace some or ALL of the midi tracks.
Then save your "NEW" Style with a name you can remember so you can find it in your styles in the future.

Living as you do in the mid-Hudson Valley of N.Y. you are forgiven for not knowing. But there are parts of the country where you might get beaten up for not knowing!!!

PeterGannon, thanks for the reply.
I watched the video, preset biab to the factory defaults and followed your instructions.
By selecting the Band(style) button the style menu opens and to the right there are more substyles but they are not selectable(greyed out).
What am I doing wrong ?

Hi sep,

What BIAB package did you purchase? For example ProPak, MegaPak, UltraPlusPak, etc. The reason I ask is because if you purchased either the ProPak or MegaPak then you will not have all the styles. The UltraPlusPak is the cheapest package that offers all styles, all Realtracks and all Realdrums.

Regards,
Noel

Many people, when attending their first Bluegrass concert, might request "Dueling Banjos." This is considered gauche, uncool, very bad form. Dead giveaway for the newbie. Don't ever do it.

"Orange Blossom Special" is a standard virtuoso piece for fiddle. Requires a complete command of the instrument, great speed, special effects, showmanship, and a sense of humor. Every bluegrass fiddler must master it to get to the upper levels of accomplishment. It is a showstopper when done well.

He is trying to determine if you have all the available styles. You had to have purchased a "package", cause thats the way it is sold!

I was having a problem with several styles that I was sure I had, still having N/A behind the name. They would show in my style picker but would not load so I went back and checked my downloads and sure enough they had been downloaded but somehow never installed. Just double clicked on them in the downloads and they promptly installed. I had to run the style picker to update and we were back in business. Could this be a cause of the problem you are having?

jazzmandan,

does it mean that I have to order another (whatever) Pak in order to work with WIN2013 Biab, or is it a kind of standalone application? The original question was:
why are by selecting the Band-button the substyles not selectable but contain a number of substyles which are greyed out or in other words why are the listed substyles not available.
Are they optional or available only with an addin, or do they need to get somehow activated?
When I select the style button over 1000 styles show up.
So what is different with the "Band/style" button?

Hi Sep57u60,

Quote:

It sounds like you don't have all the styles. My version of BIAB has all the styles and BIAB tells me that I have the following ...

And a total number of style entries (some styles are entered in multiple categories) of...

If I'm reading your above posts correctly, it also sounds like you might have purchased the $49 upgrade to go from 2012.5 to 2013. If that's the case, then you didn't get any new styles with that. That particular upgrade updates the program to run the latest things in BIAB like Hi-Q instruments, etc.

That's why I was trying to find out what version of BIAB you have. If you purchased the ProPak or the MegaPak then not all styles will be included. If you purchased the UltraPlusPak, though, you should have all styles. The different packages can be found at the below link.
