Hey all... need a lil' help. I'm stuck on this work-in-progress and just plain out of ideas...

Original thought was something on the order of SRV meets Steely Dan... result misses the mark so far.

TexasFunk

In my mind the horn section ain't woikin' but I can't find anything else in RB that quite fits. Thoughts?

At this point I'll try anything... ;-)

Rhythm Section is all Jass Funk Groovin' (1433, 1436 & 1439)
Lead lines are Texas Blues Rock (1720 & 1722)
The horn section is (2114) and the Synthpad is (1840)

Cheers!

Just my opinion but if I were looking for the SRV effect I would maybe (I said maybe) keep my backing tracks all within the Texas Blues Rock genre and then maybe experiment with solos more inclined to give a Steely Dan feel.

Just thinking out loud here . . . .

Later,

Hi Don, IMHO, the horns are not working there, aside from to me, they come in too soon in the song, then again it might be just me. I have the same impression with the synth pad; I don't thing the song benefits from it at all. In fact, I think the song sounds fine without the horns and or the synth.

Lights out in New Orleans... SUPER!

Danny, I was trying to avoid the whole Blues Progression route. Seems the RB algorithm tends to want to reach for the 7th too often - I wanted a more progressive feel.

As-is I had to resort to a chessy bit of augmented ascension (+/6/9) to fit the lead solo's. The few Steely progressions I know seem to favor Add2 type voices with weird inversions - I'm not sure how to accomplish that in RB thus the trickery. I may have another go at this one I'm better versed in RB.

For now just wanting to lose the horns (and ya, Pete, the pads are ultimately a throw-away - I used them for the scratch track and just forgot to delete it). Oops. The arrangement definately needs a lot of work - too sparse though without another voice.

FWIW I would drop the horns completely but leave the rest of the song alone. If you want something else maybe you could try replacing the horns with a B3.

Another FWIW this reminds me more of Santana than SRV.

Doc-take it easy John this is just a sharp scalpel. It will not cut deep so don't worry.

Sounds great to me. I'd try the horns behind the guitar solo. The horns sound good to me, maybe not at the beginning, but sound good later in the song.

Have Fun!

Holy smokes, a response from the Doctor himself. I am honored! Forget the song, I just want to say that PG is AMAZING. I've no clue how you came up with the algorithms to do what RB and BIAB do, but, having tried the others PG wins hands down... THANK YOU!

Thx all for the feedback - gonna put this one on the shelf awhile - needs to ferment!

Peter, again, thanks - your team is the best.

I like the guitar a lot.
Like others I would forget the horns.
