I heard about an interesting law about numbers. If there is a number that represents the total of something (e.g. number of views of your youtube video, how many records somebody sold), and we want to know what the FIRST NUMBER of that number would be, one would think that there is an equal chance of each of of the numbers 1-9 showing up as the first number. But it turns out that is incorrect. The odds of '1' appearing as the first number is about 30% ! If you want to see that in action, you could look at the number of posts in each of our forums. This is posted on this page http://www.pgmusic.com/forums/ubbthreads.php?Cat=08 out of 30 numbers under the column 'posts' begins with a 1, which is about 30% Same thing for the numbers under the column 'threads' 8/25 begin with the number 1, that is also about 30%. Same applies for the number of views or replies to a forum thread. It works as long as the range of numbers has a big range from smallest to biggest (that have more digits in the biggest one than in the smallest one) There is a good explanation of that here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XXjlR2OK1kM&list=UUoxcjq-8xIDTYp3uz647V5A&index=7

You, sir, are a veritable fount of information! aka You're full of it! Nice that you can come oot and play occasionally. Is it "backwards walkin" weather there in the Nort'woods? We hit 70F (aboot 20C) today. Masticate your ventricles (eat your heart oot, eh?).
I'm curious to see what'll happen when my joke topic hits 99,999. Just me wee Oyrish divlment. Following Dr's orders to "Have fun!"

I finally watched the video -- quite interesting. It makes sense when you watch the raffle example, but just sitting back, you would expect a fairly even distribution.
Thanks for sharing.

I had the fun of working setting up a Unix system for a company that printed Bingo cards. The math involved in that is amazing. They used a Math professor from the University of Waterloo, (home of the Blackberry), to ensure that only one winner could happen. You cannot print bingo cards or scratch cards if there is going to be an undetermined number of winners. Especially when you give away a car. So the computer generates the cards and formats them for printing. He did the math, I did the encoding for the printing using xroff, or troff, one or the other. Then I automated it and didn't get enough money, they used that software for years and years because it worked.
Silly me, again.
Seriously, bingo cards for TV bingo. Win a TV. But just one. And the insurance company involved had the reputation of a math wizard who could not in plain english say how this worked. Fun Fun Fun. Till daddy took the tv away. ..no but at one point I thought those were the words.
When I learned to read I was appalled at what I sang in church. God in 3 purses. Not 3 persons. But no one got out the book, you just heard it every week. LOL. Imagine me, about 7 or 6, glancing around wondering if people thought I was nuts. Turns out I was.

Johan, that would be a really fun thread: "Misunderstood Song Lyrics". I have a few great examples, I'm sure that you and other Canucks have more. Kick it off, eh?
