Hello all.

I did a search, but no luck.

Does anyone have any experience using the DX "Vinyl Tool" for removing scratches and pops from vinyl recordings? I tried it in RB using the default settings, but it doesn't seem to be working. Are you supposed to process the audio as you record it, or apply the processing to the recorded audio file?

The BIAB manual isn't very comprehensive on this tool.

Thanks,

Bob

I thought Vinyl Tool was to add scratches and pops.

If that's the case, I am succeeding!

I have used the Vinyl Tool from time to time and have found it useful. It works in real time as the audio is playing. I have applied it to wave files ripped from vinyl recordings. In order to generate a new wave file with the vinyl noise removed I used the "Merge Audio and VST/DXi Tracks to Stereo Wave File" command in the File Menu (Waves). Good luck.

Thanks a lot for the info.

When I was working with 32 bit I used the Vinyl Tool a lot. (I wish they would issue this as a VST so I could use it on a 64 bit machine) Anyway if I remember correctly I copied the vinyl first, copied the wav(s) then work with the Vinyl Tool on the copy.

The Vinyl Tool works quite well in removing pops and scratching. After using it I used the EQ tool (another I wish would go to VST) to bring back some of the higher frequencies.

Good luck.

OK, a random thought;
Why does toilet paper need a commercial? Who's not buying it?

Thanks Mario. I'm just recording the records into Sonar, and tweaking them there. I have a lot more tools there.

That’s what I do, record in my 64 bit Sonar then bring into RB on my 32 bit machine for the vinyl tool. Can you recommend a 64 bit VST that works as good as the vinyl tool? I haven’t found one yet but I haven’t looked in a long time.

Thanx for your time - MarioD

When I started converting my LP's to Wav's/MP3's/CD's as backups or convenience for use "on the go" I use "Spin it Again" (it's default settings are pretty good plus it does the album song list/length lookup on-line so one less thing to manually do).

Plus, depending on if using WAV and simply splitting into songs, or whatever for off-line long term storage, or wanting to burn CD's or make MP3's I also make extensive use of Audacity and Goldwave.

When I'm edtiting stright forward audio files I don’t want all the Sonar (or other DAW) overhead - just an editing app - but that is my work flow.

I'm STILL converting LPs when I have time to do it - I'll be dead before all my LP's are "converted" or even simply recorded to WAV files

Mario,

I've been using the free Sonnox Declicker in Sonar 8.5.3, with mixed results.

Sonnox has a newer plug that really looks interesting:

BUT, their plugs are REALLY EXPENSIVE! All my plugin Google searches start with the word "Free"!

Bob

Thanx for the info Bob but I think I’ll stick with PGMusic’s DXes.

Those plugins are expensive and for that amount of money I can buy a lot of used CDs! I still play my vinyl so an expense like this is unnecessary. Plus I have around 1,000 albums and I’m not going to convert them all to CDs.

Thanx again for taking time to answer my question.

You're welcome. I haven't been able to play the old vinyl for a long time. It's great to hear music that has some dynamics, and is not compressed and Autotuned to death.
