I happen to love the soundtrack to "Horse Whisperer". It had to be composed by a musician, and NOT by a "movie producer that doesnt' play an intrument". It nicely fits the storyline. It's a real, rural type of country movie where the music fits the setting nicely - and has that 'lonesome, sad' sound the movie is trying to get across.
Share if you aspire to write a movie soundtrack some day - and if so, for what type of movie. Also share (if you'd care to : ) whether you've actually contributed and written any songs for TV shows or movies, and how you managed to land that gig.

I'm a huge John Williams fan. His scores for Star Wars, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, and Superman especially get to me, and the Indiana Jones theme is one of the most perfectly iconic pieces of music since Copland's American Spring.

Eric Serra's work on "The Fifth Element" impresses me mightily, especially the song "Little Light Of Love," which runs under the end titles. (He did not, however, write the music for the chase scene--that was by Cheb Khalid.) Eric was a French session musician who now works closely with producer Luc Besson.
The music for "The Princess Bride," while not especially noteworthy in itself, should be recognized for its ambition. It was Mark Knopfler's first soundtrack. He's come a long way since.
And while we're on musicians doing film scores, how about Tangerine Dream's work on "Sorcerer"?
In the Actual Film Composer's category, I vote for anything by Maurice Jarre. You've heard him, whether you know it or not--he did the score for "Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome," among MANY other major films. In MM:BT, listen for his scrap metal percussion parts. Great stuff.

That's ok Mike, it's on my list too just not #1. It's an iconic song though. My fav is Mission Impossible, it just rocks and I've loved that song since the TV show. I played it on B3 in my old 70's lounge act. They really did a great job modernizing it.
