Would just like to add that the "Introduction to Music production" course is great as well, runs for six weeks.
I think its possible to do a late signup and though not able to take part in other aspects of the course its possible to watch the videos. (main thing for me anyways)
I will mainly just watch the videos in both courses and there is also an option at right of video on page to download them to your computer as well.

Musiclover, Forgive my selective Myopia but I don't see an option to download the videos. I see nothing on the right of the screen at all. Please be Oyrisman specific. I want to save the lessons for periodic review. Pat is one awesome teacher!

Three days left to do Assignment one and I finally realized to scroll down past the General Assignment info and there are the boxes to fill in. DUH... So thought I'd share my lack of focus just in case anyone else wasn't sure where to find it.

Not that I know of. But neither have I, so I am not holding that against him.

I started it and did the first 2 lessons but I am in the middle of learning songs for 2 bands so I won't have time to do the work and will have to drop out.

Just seen your post Don, as I am in Ireland (really) its just reached me here!
I am using ie and to the right far right side of each video there are 3 boxes one for subtitles (text) and one for subtitles (srt) whatever that means, the thrid box with a down pointing arrow is for downloading.
If you can't see it then proably you need to adjust the zoom on your browser : view--zoon , in ie anwyays.
Another good option is to install realplayer, and when any video appears on browser a little box appears above it saying "download video"
Hope this helps and the best of Irish luck to you Don, be jeepers

Well whatever about his hit song writing he could make a fortune as a story teller, brilliant at that.

My thanks also to Josie for the alert to the course. Am enjoying it so far but suspect challenges ahead. Good good.

Thanks Don for the heads up on the Berklee songwriting course. The videos are entertaining and informative. Having written songs for years "by ear" without much training it's nice to learn that some of what I've been doing intuitively has a basis in fact. I'm sure it will bring lots of new ideas and approaches to my hobby. Loved his song example about having all his past loves in the freezer downstairs. My kind of humor Hope I can make time to complete it all. Thanks again, Carkins

Don,
I was at a Pat Pattison seminar in January this year and he said that over 30,000 people had signed up at that stage. I imagine more joined in between then and now.
Enjoy the journey. He's the world's best.
Regards, Noel
Noel, you've crowed about this guy in the past. Now that I'm in this class, I can say that you weren't blowing smoke. I still can't believe that this class is free of charge. It's outstanding. I've only completed 2 weeks of the video lectures (perhaps 1.5 hours of lecture), and I've learned some new perspectives and tricks that have already affected my outlook and songwriting, at least from the lyrics side of things. "The Boxes" and # lines and line length consideration are tools I put into use just last night as I wrote out lyrics to a song.

Hi Scott, I'm glad you've jumped on-board his course. Pat is brilliant. I have an immense respect for him. It's no accident that he's a college professor of poetry and lyric writing. It's also no accident that his students have won Grammys (e.g. John Mayer, Gillian Welch). I've been to 13 or 14 of his weekend seminars and I'll definitely be going again when he comes out here in January 2014. I have no doubt that Pat will cover melody and harmony in his course. His presentations are often more directly focused on lyrics and melody and harmony tend to happen indirectly. Personally, I've found that the implications of writing lyrics with attention to all the aspects that Pat teaches have a huge impact on melody and the supporting harmony. These days, I develop my lyrics first and get their movement, and subsequent emotional journey, in place before I play around with music. I've come to find that, for me, getting the lyric rhyme and rhythm organised is the best way I can build the strongest foundation for my song. Apart from "Writing Better Lyrics" - which I gather from posts is the book he's using for this course - Pat's other two books ... - Essential Guide To Lyric Form And Structure
- Essential Guide To Rhyming
... are also very, very valuable. In the "Lyric Form And Structure" book, Pat goes into great detail about how to enhance the emotion of a lyric through its musical motion (i.e. line length, spotlight phrases, lyric acceleration and deceleration through rhyme, etc.). He has plenty of exercises to practise in these books, too. I regularly re-read all three books. I've found that there's always something that I pickup with each read that I didn't see the read before! Last year, a handful of us got together and worked our way through his newest book "Songwriting Without Boundaries". It was 8 weeks of exercises that developed skills I had no idea I possessed! It was a long journey but well worthwhile. I even set up a completely private forum so that we could all do the exercises over the web. It worked very well (If a small group of, say, 10 - 20 people are interested in undertaking this journey after the present course has finished, I'm happy to get the site up and running again. It's all set up.) Anyway, enjoy the course! It was great of Josie to find this and to share it with everyone. Noel

A good ccourse Noel. I'm watching videos as well and doing the quizes, havent listened to any of the songs required for the course or done the assignments but picking up a good few ideas. Just dont have the time. I'm enjoying the introduction to music production course as well, getting to know a bit of the tech musical jargon as well as picking up some tips. I found myself wondering though as I listened to Pats lectures and talked about other songwriters did they just have a natural ability to write a song or did they apply some of Pats techniques sub consciously without realising what they were doing? Although Pat is a great gifted lecturer poet and gentleman he would probalby be having hits right left and centre if that was all what is needed, just makes me wonder what degree luck is involved in writing a hit song, probably being in the right place with the right band and the right song at the right time, and other variables as well. Probably far more great songs that never seen the light of day about that missed all the above things. Probably the best way to go about it is just to have fun as Peter Gannon says. Musiclover
