interesting series Mike.

The same poster has also has a series called "original songs vs remakes" parts 1-4 which is also interesting.

The intro series makes me reconsider my whole approach to song writing. I don't put NEARLY enough effort into making the intro compelling

Just think "Behind Closed Doors" by the great George Jones. Is there anyone that doesn't recognize that piano intro?

If you're looking for memorable intros, how about "Baker Street" by Gerry Rafferty?

It doesn't come much more memorable than that sax riff!

Floyd.

You're right about Keef Richards, but how could you miss "Satisfaction"?

When I was sixteen, our band got invited to play at the student nurses dance at the local hospital. We thought we must be dreaming when the booking came through. We opened with Satisfaction and as soon as we started that riff the dance floor filled up.

It was the height of my career! Been downhill since then.

LOL. I just grabbed the first few I found.
If I had listed them all, I would have been there all night.
Keef does not get the recoginition he probably deserves for that one thing - the greatest RIFF MAN ever.
Love that story ROG - and the added chuckle.

Me too...

The Greatest intros are in the wealth of "The American Songbook" and Broadway..and Bistros.

One of the greatest is Nancy Wilson, first "introcing the tune, then singing/talking the "intro" to a song that was basically an intro...that "boiled down" to three little words, I SAW YOU!!

Her she is in all her glory...lots of ammunition from her on "intros"...

Solid! Potato Solid!!

I think Handel qualifies for Hallelujah Chorus. Beethoven for his opening 'riff' for the 5th Symphony, Beatles get lots of credit for GREAT riffs.

Best keyboard intro ever! Well in my humble opinion anyway. Blue Collar Man by Styx.

this thread got me thinking, so I took some time and sampled most of the songs on my MP3 player to get a not-so-quick overview of the "signature intro" phenomenon.

Based on this short test, nearly ALL of the sampled songs had what I would call a signature intro. Very few if any started out with something that sounded like it was snatched from the main body of the song... but they all FIT the song seamlessly.

Now I'm wondering if the intros are part of the reason why I singled out these particular songs as favorites

The 2001 space odyssey before Elvis hit the stage that went into his first tune! That is the most memorable intro I can think of. As far as just individual songs, Freebird, Sweet Home Alabama, We Will Rock You, The Entertainer, Phantom of the Opera, Stairway to Heaven, Smoke on the Water, Hotel California, Dust In The Wind, Jailhouse Rock, Way Down these are just a few; there are so many memorable intro's, but unlike some songs that can be mistaken for another, once you've heard these, they can't be mistaken for any other song.
