I use BinaB to create jazz backing tracks for my own playing and some public stuff with a sax and brass group

I use real tracks Bass, Piano and Drums as I am running 2013 UltraPlusPak for windows

A friend has asked me to try to create a backing for this song

http://youtu.be/K_S41oEfT9g

I have the melody line and chords as its an old standard but my knowledge of Afro Caribbean music is almost non existent

Is this Reggae or Ska--or perhaps some hybrid

I have 42 Reggae styles in my BinaB but they all seem much too regimented to make it sort of swing along like this

I hope this is the right section to ask

Regards

Phil

_Reggae1 works well (this one has an optional sax solo)

BTW, I made this demo in 2 minutes, including typing in the chords, and uploading to soundcloud.com directly from Band-in-a-Box 2013.

Thanks Peter

I'm sure I tried that but didn't get quite that result

Did you change any of the tracks in the "assign real tracks" function from the ones loaded as standard in Reggae 1

I'll have another go

Best Regards

No changes. Just load in the _reggae1 style and then load in the song demo, and press play. If it sounds good, change the chords to your song.

Hi Peter

That works--I had the speed set too fast before and the Bass line seemed much too complex

I have slowed the song down and removed the organ track and we are ready to go

However that brings up a very interesting question about how BinaB works

I only use Real Tracks and have my options set to automatically change a real track if its a better match for the speed of the song BUT I thought that if you locked in a certain Real Track i.e. stopped it automatically changing to a different speed match, then it plays the same notes based on the chords no matter what you did with the speed--obviously that's dam clever as it stays in pitch

BUT, I'm pretty sure that is not what has happened here--it seems to me that as I slowed the song down the bass player actually played a lot simpler set of notes and not just the "same notes but slower"--I checked and it hadn't changed the Bass Real Track

I know the programme changes what the Bass player plays each time you hit the GenPlay button but I had assumed it was still pretty much as complex each time based upon the speed of the song

Am I right--if so then I cant see how you can do that unless there are loads of variations to each Real Track you produce ?????

Yes, a BB RealTrack (or MIDI Supertrack) will often play completely differently at slower tempos,,as musicians do. So you don't just get the same notes but slower, you instead get different rhythms. If the RealTrack name is displayed in the mixer with a ~ tilde character, then that Realtracks is capable of doing that.
