G'day. I've used both Sibelius 3 and currently Print Music 2011. I have been making melody midi files in PrintMusic and importing them into BIAB. After I rendered to .wav, I found that the mix was not what I thought I had made in BIAB. The melody volume really fluctuated. Looking at the Events List I found a whole lot of CC7 changes. I had not put any in and I was pretty sure they didn't get there during the mixing either. Thanks to Mario, I learned how to quickly get rid of the unwanted CC7's in Sonar. Still, I was haunted by those unwanted volume changes. Finally, the light bulb came on when I listened to a few songs that I had done entirely in PrintMusic. There were volume changes and I had not entered any dynamics into the songs. There are no options/preferences to stop this that I could find.

I would like to get a different notation program but certainly one that doesn't add CC7's. However, I don't want to spend $500 either. I would like one that could handle 16 instruments if that's possible. I'm not asking anyone to do any research for me since I can Google, but if you have something you like from personal experience, I'd appreciate any comments you might have. Thanks.

Stan

You might want to give MuseScore a try. It's free, simple, and surprisingly powerful (and it allows unlimited staves).

Stan -

Are you entering notes one-by-one in Printmusic, or are you playing them in with a piano keyboard?

You might want to look at both the "Human Playback" settings, as well as the "Play As Recorded" checkmark, both of which are found under the MIDI menu.

Just a thought.

Thanks Tom. I'll take another look at that one. It's been a couple of years and they probably have improved since I first looked.

Hi John. I'm entering them in 1 by one. I wish I could play the in with the keyboard though. I tried some piano lessons, but I think it's too late for my old man fingers now. I have similar problems with the guitar, but I can do a little on the uke.

I guess I'll do a little research. I'm getting better at biab notation, but sometimes if things go in not quite right, it takes me awhile to get stuff corrected.

I've got a number of different notation programs, but when I want to enter a score, I'll generally use Noteflight. It's a web-based application that you can try out for free.

I like it because it matches the way I think about note entry, so I can quickly enter in music using my computer keyboard. If I want something more, I'll export the file as MusicXML and import it into another program for refinement.

When I'm in the mood to use a mouse, BiaB is really speedy. But I'm just more comfortable typing.

Vocal control, you say. Never heard of it. Is that some kind of ProTools thing?

Thanks. I was just looking at Magic Score Maestro 7. It got a good rating by top 10 software reviews. Cost is $59.95 with coupon. I just put in a que to their tech support to see if it prints out individual parts. There's some question about that. One feature that it has that I like is the virtual keyboard. I used to use the keyboard with Sibelius, but haven't had good experience using it with PrintMusic. I'll give Noteflight a try.

Update: Noteflight is very user friendly compared to most of the other notation programs. I got to try a demo online and I like the flow so I signed up for the paid version which is $49 a year. Initially I thought that would be expensive, but to get the benefit of upgrades, the cost is reasonable. IMO. So thanks for the tips. I probably would have bought an offline version.
