Why is my cpu usage so high. With 2 different asio drivers my my cpu usage according to the meter in the tool bar is always in the 70s or 80s. I set latency in both driver at 384 but the meter still rates high usage. In the windows performance meter I am never using more than 20% of cpu. With memory usage at about 25% of the 4gig I have available. My processor is a amd phenom Quad core. When I switch to mme drivers the usage is only about 40s on the toolbar but remains the same in the windows resource meter.

It does sound very high, considering the spec of your machine. Even our old Sempron machine runs lower than that unless we really push it.

What exactly are you running when it shows that level - VSTi, plugins, number of tracks, sub-groups?

4 instances of short circut vst sampler and two tracks of digital audio. One instance or Reverberate reverb vst.

I can only think that the sampler is processor intensive - some of them can be very heavy on resources. Running multiple versions could easily be the problem. Does the overhead increase much when you add each instance?

Ok, something else to try -

The CPU usage indicator on the toolbar shows two figures - one for PowerTracks and one for the total usage. When you're just running PowerTracks, the two readings should be very close. If they're not, then something other than PT is hogging the resources. This may help us to track down what it is.

Thanks Rog for all your suggestions. But after a while I got so frustrated I wasnt even making any music just working on computers trying to get to the place I could think creatively. Finally I just broke down and went to micro center. I think I got lucky. I bought a I5 quadcore with 8gigs ram and 2 terabyte hard drive for 400 dollars. It was a return that someone had bought and brought back within the 15 day free return period micro center has. So far so good but remembering all the VST effects ins, files, interface drivers, wow. I forgot how much work it all was. Took me about 20 hours total to get it all going again. And you were right none of the cpu usage numbers made sense. Now Im getting about 4% Power Tracks And 6% total.
