Hi Dave,

I'm presently reading through the above post and trying to understand your problem so that I can help. Could you please confirm that what I've got below is correct.

1. At 10:37 a.m. you started up BIAB. However it wasn't until 10:58 a.m. that you had the BIAB start-up screen. That is, it took 20 minutes for the "2013 BIAB" start-up screen to appear.

2. After the start-up screen appeared, a box popped up and asked you about associating file types in Explorer. Is this correct?

MY THOUGHTS AT THIS STAGE: The above behaviour is most strange. At the moment, I find myself thinking that it sounds like the BIAB set-up program has been run instead of BBW.EXE (the file that starts BIAB).

As an experiment, please try the following. Firstly, completely shut your computer down and restart it. (Do not simply 'suspend' it. Your computer must be fully shutdown and restarted to clear all memories.) Now go to the BIAB folder (probably c:\bb), scroll through the list of files until you find BBW.EXE and then double-click on that file to start BIAB. Does BIAB start normally doing it this way?

3. After the "do you want to associate file types" box, you next get a box that asks about registering songs.

4. Next you load up a jazz tune and then you get the a box that pops up and says it cannot open the wav file.

MY THOUGHTS NOW: I'm not quite sure how to interpret points 3 and 4. Did you render a song and create a wav file or did you experiment with 'Performance Tracks'? To be honest, I'm not exactly sure under what conditions BIAB will ask for a wav file. Maybe someone with more experience will chime in and help here.

5. After all the above, you went into the Audio and Midi settings and set-up ASIO as your default driver. To be specific, you selected ASIO for you Audiobox device.

MY THOUGHTS AT THIS POINT: Using ASIO might be the issue. I suggest that until you get BIAB working, stay with the MME driver. This is the friendliest driver for Windows.

6. The computer started to behave strangely. You unsuccessfully tried to start BIAB multiple times using the BIAB icon.

MY THOUGHTS: It sounds like the BBE.EXE program has not fully shutdown. Next time this happens,
    a) Use CTRL+ALT+DEL,
    b) Select 'Task Manager'
    c) Select the 'Processes' tab
    d) Scroll down the list of programs that are running until you find BBW.EXE
    e) Select BBW.EXE
    f) Press the "End Process" button on the lower right side of the 'Task Manager' dialogue box.

Are points 1 - 6 that I have listed above correct?

Also, do you run BIAB from the USB drive or is it installed on your computer's hard drive?

Regards,
Noel

Hi Dave,

I'm guessing a bit here, but when you say G:\bb, I take that to mean that you're running BIAB from the PG Music USB external hard drive. Is that correct? If so, it sounds like the shortcut that you've been using to start-up the program is faulty.

Do you have a second installation of BIAB on one of your hard drives?

Regards,
Noel

Hi Dave,

Don't worry about those two files, if BIAB can't find them when it starts up, it will create new ones.

The fact that your settings are not being saved suggests that for some reason, Windows is not properly seeing G:\bb as your program's directory. If I were experiencing this problem, what I'd do is to re-install BIAB with the 'Run from USB drive' option. To do that, below are the steps I'd follow. (I appreciate that you're a long-time user and so the below is definitely overkill. The reason I'm including it is because the more detailed information may be useful to someone less experienced than yourself. For your own purposes, please select the bits that are useful.)

My re-installation process ...

1. Plug in the USB drive but DO NOT start BIAB.

2. Navigate to the USB drive using My Computer or Windows Explorer. Double-click on the file "Setup.exe" (1) to start the installation process.

3. When the screen "Welcome to the PG Music hard drive setup up wizard" pops up, choose "Next".

4. If an "Information" screen now pops up like in the image below, simply choose "Next".

5. When the "Select Components" screen appears, I'd choose "Full Installation" (1) and then just leave the default checkboxes selected (2). Select "Next".

6. Wait while BIAB prepares the computer for the installation. (The "Initializing Band In A Box Setup" screen will appear and indicate that things are happening.)

7. When the below screen appears, click "Next".

8. When the license agreement appears, select "I accept the agreement". Choose "Next".

9. Another "Information" screen appears that explains about the different options. Select "Next".

10. When the "Setup type" box appears, select the top option to "Run BIAB directly from the USB drive". Select "Next". The program will install.

11. When the "Hi-Q Instruments Setup" pops up, select "Next" and install them.

12. When the "Sampletank Setup" appears, select "Next" and install it.

13. After installation is complete, look for the BIAB icon on the Desktop. Right-click on it and select "Properties" from the menu that pops up. Double-check that the "Target" (1) and the "Start in" (2) are listed as shown below.

When I'm satisfied that I've methodically worked through all the above, I'd start up BIAB using the icon and keep my fingers crossed that it will work.

Hope this advice is useful,
Noel

Hi Dave,

I was very pleased to read that we're on the right track with getting your issue fixed. Nice! I hope the program still played in the morning.

By the way, I've heard that for people who have had strokes, playing music can be a very useful thing to do as it's exercise for the brain and trains the brain to develop new pathways.

I don't know if you're interested, but the below link is to a 20 min talk by a brain scientist who awoke one day to find herself having a stroke. Because she is a neuroscientist, she analysed herself during the course of the event. Her insight is amazing. In my opinion, the talk is brilliant. It's presented extremely well and is very engaging.

Let me know if BIAB is still playing!

All the best,
Noel
