Ron, my Physical Therapist just ran in to tell me: "The Possum has died!" George was such an influence on my earlier Country Music. One of my all time favorites by George was "Walk Through This World With Me". I was stationed at Fort Hood, Texas. Bought the vinyl LP and wore it out. This brings back some treasured memories. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TQaT9qL6iu0

"He Stopped Loving Her Today" comes to mind.
But some of my very favorites of George were the great duets with him and Tammy.
He was quite a character and would take off on the riding lawnmower when too drunk to drive the car - or so the stories go.
RIP George.

Yes, another great icon gone. 81 is respectable, but still too young these days.
RIP, George!

I was reading those stories in George's own words. No one knows how many times that State Troopers just took him home and put him to bed. This, sadly, is one occasion where "no show" won't miss. RIP, Possum!

I had the pleasure of meeting him in Nashville about 15 or so years ago, very gracious. I got the news on the way to a jazz gig yesterday evening and the only country tunes I played were the possum's, the crowd did not mind at all.
RIP George, and I guess he stopped loving her yesterday.
Later,

Later,
If you ever get the chance, read the account of that recording session for "He Stopped Loving Her". The entire thing was spliced together (comped) because old George couldn't get a really decent take.
http://www.americansongwriter.com/2013/04/behind-the-song-he-stopped-loving-her-today/
"Sherrill had to piece together the results from several sessions for the finished product, and had to deal with Jones’ difficulty with the melody; he kept confusing it with the tune from Kris Kristofferson’s “Help Me Make It Through The Night.” The spoken-word section also tripped up the singer, who kept slurring the words."
Still, my favorite Country song of all time.

I'd bet lots (all) of the great songs had lots of takes and splices. not to mention edits and EQ and reverb and doubling and everything else that makes a studio recording so much cleaner than a live one.

George is rumored to have refused to record "He Stopped Loving Her Today" because it left the listeners to down. He demanded a new ending be written so the part about "her" coming to the funeral was added. I think that was a good decision.
