In another thread, this topic was discussed:

>>> One major function that BIAB does not have, namely, the ability to take in a melody and generate chords, something people have been asking for here for years.

Band-in-a-Box does have this function. We call it the re-harmonist. This will generate a chord progression, given a melody, in a style of your choosing. Press the Reharmonist button, and you can generate it for the whole song, or you can do it interactively, where it shows you a menu of chord progressions (for each 4 bar chunk of the song).

Cool, PG

Is there a way to specify a "dumbing down" of both the complexity of the chords generated, and the number?

I have tried re-harmonist only briefly and the results were not too encouraging. Its results were usually a plethora of jazz voicings and way too many chords.

So a method to create very simple and straightforward chord progs would be nice. If there already is a way (that works) to do this then my apologies, but I haven't found a method that does it successfully.

Any advice you can give here?

Thanks

Dennis

Yes, you can choose a different genre. For example, if you choose New age, you won't get a bunch of jazz chords.

Ahh cool, cheers PG ...so it follows that the chord gen is dependent on style chosen - ergo a pop style would deliver pop chords, rock style rock chords etc etc...

Sorry for the question. It was really a "doh!!!" moment for me.

I will play with it some more.

Dennis

I believe I wrote that. I stand humbly corrected. Obviously it lies outside of the 5% or so of BIAB with which I am familiar. smile

Hi Richard,

I know just what you are talking about. I've been using Biab for many years but still have only scratched the surface of what it can do.
