Hi, I am trying to play some RealStyles with pedal steel, for example
_CBALAD1.STY. Slow Ctry Bal w PedSteel (65 RS)
making sure that the memo box in the style picker dialogue says that I indeed have all the parts of that style before playing it.
When I pick this or any style with the pedal steel, it plays like a note or two of pedal steel just after the cou8t-in, but then quite for the rest of the song. and is then forever quiet. It's not too fun. Am I overlooking something basic?
I'd be grateful for any advice! (The pedal steel demos on the website helped sway me to take the BiB plunge to begin with.)

Every example has a pgmusic Demo song or sometimes more than one of them.
I would try invoking the Demo Song for the particular Pedal Steel you are using and let it Generate and Play and see if it plays back okay with that songfile. Just in the way of testing it out.
The Stylepicker has a Demo song button at the top of the Stylepicker Window, if you find any Style that has the particuar Steel Guitar you are using in it by using the Search feature inside stylepicker, then, with that style highlighted, hit that Demo button and load the demo song. See if the part generates correctly or not.
If it does generate correctly in the demo song, suspect something about your songfile that is preventing the RealTrack from generating.
That could be caused by having the track FROZEN.
Tracknames that have an ASTERISK "snowflake" in front of them are Frozen. ex: *Piano
These tracks must first be UNfrozen by Rightclicking on the trackname and selecting UNfreze before attempting to invoke or Gen/Play a new track there.
Hope this helps,
--Mac

Mac, thanks very much.
Those demo songs are a great resource!
Anyway, I *can* open the relevant demo, and the pedal steel plays throughout; ditto if I create a new song file, throw in some chords and hit play; so the problem must be with the particular song file I'd been using.
I wonder what could be the problem -- I didn't consciously change any song settings.
Don't know if it's relevant, but I have imported an audio file (via the Audio / Import Audio commend in the top menu) into the problematic song's Audio track , so that it plays along with BiB-generated accompaniment, although it does not influence the accompaniment -- it is solely for monitoring purposes, and is not referenced by BiB algorithms.
Some RealTracks do play in this song, so I wonder why the pedal steel would only play at the start.
Is there anywhere else I could look for troublesome settings?
Meanwile... it might make take a while to get to the bottom of this -- as a quick fix to let me continue working on the song, is there a way I can copy and paste the chords from one BiB song to another?
Normally I'd do Save As but that doesn't work here; I have to create a new file to get the pedal steel to play. I'd perfer not to key in all the chords manually from the old file.
Thanks again for your help.
so the problem must be with my song file. I don't see any of the asterisks you mention (at least I don't see them by the track names listed at the top left of the BiB menu, or in the mixer); and in fact when I right-cklicked the "Strings" item at the top left of the menu (this is where the pedal steel is assigned) I see that the track in fact is NOT frozen.

Ok, I think I've come closer to identifying the culprit, but don't know a solution yet.
If I start a new song file, type in chords, and play the style, the pedal steel plays all the way through. Adding the audio track later doesn't mess anything up either.
But if I start a new file, and instead of typing chords, I import them from an existing midi file, the pedal steel will only play one or two notes in the first bar and then stop playing.
My guess is that perhaps I have got some setting in the [File / Import Chords from MIDI file] dialogue wrong -- but wow there are so many... any ideas what I should try?

The Imported MIDI file very likely has Continuos Controller data imbedded in it, like maybe CC7 Volume or other commands that were used to make the MIDI file sound right.
Band in a Box uses those same MIDI CC commands to control the Volume of BB Tracks.
You can take a look at the MIDI commands using the MIDI Event List.
I would first open the raw MIDI file in Realband, then use its editor to strip out all of those CC's, then Export the result as a Standard MIDI file and then replace the MIDI file imported into biab with the stripped file.
This is not a program bug at all.
And, you did not mention this MIDI file until now. That missing info can lead things far away from help or understanding.

Have you tried to open the song file in Real Band?
I usually go to RB to get my steel guitars.

--Mac Mac, you are quite right, I really should have mentioned at the outset that the problem is occurring within a song from which the chords come from the File / Interpret Chord from Midi file command. I hadn't foreseen that that would matter but yes, I should have clarified from the start. I apologize for any time I might have wasted. (GuitarHacker – before I move onto RealBand, I want to see if this can be fixed in BiB). Taking your advice, Mac, I cleaned out all the midi controller data (not in RealBand, but with another midi editor), and imported it using the File / Interpret Chord from Midi file command. This did not fix the problem, unfortunately. The result is the same as before. Let me back up and be very explicit about the setup, objective, things tried, and results. [But before I do, perhaps as a shortcut to an at least interim BiB solution – is there some changeable setting somewhere, which might currently be telling the pedal steel to play just in the first bar?] Setup and objectiveI have an existing performance which I want BiB to help me generate accompaniment to. The performance exists in three formats File a): the original midi recording, including velocity and expression midi controller data File b): a midi version of File a) with the controller data purged. File c) a pre-recorded audio File – i.e., a rendering of File a) by a nice VST. This syncs up perfectly on playback with File a) ( or File b) for that matter). I wish to use BiB to generate accompaniment using the RealStyle CBALAD1.STY. Slow Ctry Bal w PedSteel (65 RS), of which I have all necessary RealTracks, i.e., RD: NASHVILLEEVEN16^5-a:Snare, HiHat , b:Snare, Ride :Brian Fullen RT366: Bass, Electric, Country Ev 065, Dow Tomlin RT364: Guitar, Acoustic, Fingerpicking Ev 065, Jason Roller RT368: Guitar, Acoustic, Strumming Ev 065, Jason Roller RT369: Pedal Steel, Background Ev 065, Steve Hinson Since I saw your post, I have now tried to make the accompaniment three ways, as follows: Attempt 1--I create a new BiB File --I set the key, tempo and time signature to match File a) – I Import File a) via the File/Interpret Chord from Midi File command. – I deselect that command's options to “Include continuous controllers and pitch bend” data and to “Include Patch changes”. – It reports 61 chords successfully interpreted. All are correct. – I Import File c) , using the File / Import Audio command, for monitoring. – I select the RealStyle and press PlayGen. The result is that the song plays every one of these RealTracks styles well – i.e., they sync to and accompany the audio coherently, sometimes beautifully, throughout the song – except the pedal steel, which only plays a few introductory notes. This is a shame as I am specifically after pedal steel. Attempt 2Same method as Attempt 1, except that instead of File a), I import File b) – that is, the midi file without the controller data. Results are the same as Attempt 1. Attempt 3Same method as Attempt 1 or Attempt 2, except that instead of importing a midi file for chord recognition, I manually enter the chords. I thought this would solve it, but it doesn't. The result is that all components of the RealStyle, including the pedal steel, do play – *but * they sound horrible when monitoring File c). It sounds out of sync and out of tune –unsusable. The non-pedal steel RealStyle instruments are not playing the same things they were in Attempt 1 or Attempt 2, when they sounded nice with File c). *** So unfortunately, the cleaning out of all the midi controller data has no effect. (Why would these data have effected only the pedal steel, but not the other RealStyle instruments?) This is pretty frustrating. I have 5 instruments in a style. And the only one I can't play along properly with File C) is the only one I'm interested in, the pedal steel. In other cases, BiB tells you when a RealStyle isn't going to work – either by the use of “NA” in the Style picker dialogue, or the yellow message boxes which tell you that something isn't available for a certain instrument in the RealStyle you've just chosen. But I'm not getting any message telling me that the pedal steel won't work. Whether this behaviour is a “bug” or a “feature” – well, I'll just say that if it is feature, then it is a very limiting, counter-intuitive, and unwanted one. Since we have eliminated the midi controller data as the culprit, or so it seems, then why on earth would only one of the Realstyle instruments out of five behave this way? Again, is there anyting else I can try within BiB to make this work?

Perhaps if you find one of those free file sharing sites and upload your songfile attempt to it and provide the link to that in this thread, others here could download your file and have a look at it.
That would be much faster way of going about this at this stage of the game as there are so many possibilities to investigate.
Seeing the actual songfile on our own BB setups would likely get to the bottom of this fairly quickly.

--Mac Thanks Mac for being willing to have a look. I've uploaded a zip file, "lingyai BIAB problem_files.zip", which contains the three files mentioned in my last post, plus a BiB song file I've been working with, and a ReadMe.pdf (read it first), here http://www.sendspace.com/file/qkd0ibIt's close to 19 mb, due to File c) being an audio file. CAREFUL -- on this page you will see 4 buttons or links inviting you to download. On closer inspection you will see that 3 of them are actually advertisements. Don't click on them. Instead, only click on the link in the blue box which reads "Click here to start download from sendspace".

I tried every download link on the page, using Firefox browser here, not one of the links contained your zipped bb files, although the identifier for them is on the page.
Maybe I'll have to start up IE and see what it looks like then, dunno.
You mention AUDIO files, that won't be of much help if the actual bb songfiles involved aren't in there.

Hi lingyai, Thank you for posting the file. It helped a great deal. I downloaded your song and had a play around with it. When I isolated part of the problem I sent the information to Mac to confirm my find. Here's what I wrote to Mac. The problem is an interesting one. I thought I'd pass on what I've discovered in case it's useful to you.
When I noticed the file was MGX, I knew that Melody or Soloist was set to multichannel. It was the Melody track. I generated the song and the behaviour that lingyai describes occurred.
Next I set the Melody track to "Single Channel"** and saved the file as MGU. I regenerated and the problem still existed. I noticed that volumes of all tracks other than Piano and Strings were zero.
Lastly, I right-clicked on Bar 1 to find out what settings were there since the red box showed something was present. It seems lingyai had set every bar to 3/4. When I "reset all bars", down the bottom of that dialogue window, and then regenerated the song, the steel guitar generated correctly.
My take on this is that the style lingyai has used is 4/4 and s/he is forcing it to 3/4. While the finger-picking guitar generates under these conditions, the steel guitar does not. It seems there's more to this than I understand.
**Note: to set the Melody track to "Single Channel", click on "Melody" on the uppermost menu (top of the screen) and then select "Track Type".
Mac replied with the following. We can't put 3 beats into the first bar in BB.
It is in the FAQs, we have to make the first bar 4 beats and THEN change the rest to 3 beats. The link below will take you to one of the FAQs where varying time signatures is discussed. http://www.pgmusic.com/techfaq29.htm#18If you're interested, I've sent you a private message with a link to a modified version of your file. I've used a country waltz style that contains a pedal steel in 3/4. For what it's worth, I've always found it better to use a style in the time signature that fits the music rather than to try and truncate a 4/4 style. Hope this helps, Noel

Mac, Noel96,
-- First and foremost, thank you very much for the time you've put into this.
--I (I'm a he, by the way ;-) ) had not set each bar to 3/4 time; rather, this is what BiB sets when I import the midi file for chord recognition purposes. And to my ears anyway, this is correct -- the chords change every three beats. Am I wrong about this? (Could well be, I am not musically schooled.)
-- Noel96, I did not see a pm from you, but I did follow the steps you mentioned re resetting all the bars.
Unfortunately, this did not work -- while it enables the entire realstyle including the pedal steel to play, the result is out of tune and sync with the audio file.
That is the ultimate test, for reasons I'll explain in a moment. For now, just bear in mind that the realstyles except the pedal steel *do* play properly with the audio when you follow the steps described above for Attempt 1. The crux of this matter is to get the pedal steel to do the same.
As for just what the audio file does and does not do in the equation...
The audio file is the track for which I am seeking accompaniment. It is strictly for monitoring; no BiB algorithm references it; it is just playing in the background as I audition styles etc.
It is not causing problems here. But it does detect problems, because if a BiB-generated part is out of time / tune with it, there's a problem with the BiB-generated part.
This is because it is an audio rendering of the underlying 90 bpm, key of Db major midi track (aka File a) or File b); this is the same midi track which I get BiB to detect the chords from). As it is only an audio rendering, it has the same bpm and notes as the midi file, so the two will naturally sync. You can see this if you line the two up in, for example, RB or another DAW, assign the midi version to an instrument (Coyote Forte, Sampletank etc) and play them together.
The reason this audio file is even part of this equation is as follows. Having gotten, outside of BiB, the midi performance in File a) to sound just how I wanted it, I then browsed in my DAW for the best virtual instrument to play it through. I settled on the 3rd party nylon acoustic guitar library you hear in the audio file. This recording will appear in my final version of the song. I will produce the final song in my DAW, using it and exported versions of any BiB elements which I like. So far, until I hit this pedal steel problem, I have successfully exported everything I’d wanted to: three BiB-generated midi tracks, and one RealStyle finger-picked guitar part.
I monitor the audio because this particular guitar performance with the nylon will influence how I audition BiB styles; it is just not the same for me to audition these elements against, say, the midi performance (File a)) playing in BiB through Sampletank or what-not. I prefer my way, because when audioning BiB suggestions against something played through a midi playback instrument which you know will not (or probably not) be the instrument you finally use, you have to imagine how it will sound with the version which is in the recording. I’d prefer to monitor using that version itself.
So I import this audio into BiB, browse styles while listening to both the audio file and the BiB-generated parts playing the which BiB detected from midi File a).
Usually these styles -- whether they are RealStyles, plain vanilla midi styles, or what-not -- play back just fine with the audio (though sometimes I have to tweak volume and pan settings in the mixer.) They are in sync and in tune. But they aren't when I follow the remedial steps I've been advised to take so far.
Next Step: I will open a ticket
I do want to hear that song you created, Noel96, if you could try PMing me again. Maybe what you've done solves this.
If it doesn't, gentlemen, I think the best next step is for me to open a ticket with PG and report back later. I don't want to waste any more of the time you've been very generous with already. I need to establish whether in this case the pedal steel style is truly inaccessible the way I want it within BiB. If it is, then I'll at least to know to look for workarounds, for example, trying this in RealBand as Guitarhacker suggests. (The only reason I haven't yet is that I've still only got maybe only 20 hours of BiB under my belt, and am finding it at times daunting enough without having to get to grips with another new PG program. Maybe it's time.)

Sounds to me like your MIDI file, converted to Audio, is not starting at the same time as the BB playbsck.
There is a way to adjust the beginning of an Audio file, under the Audio->Edit menu, we can time-shift the entire audio file forwards or backwards to make it start at the same time as BB. The process is one of trial and error, though, it is not automatic in nature.

Thanks Mac. But I have adjusted for that -- they start at the same time. The timing problems start from then on. It may be that your audio file is slightly off of exact BPM. You might try starting over, hit New and then import that audio file via the Audio Chord Wizard, use the ACW to first create a Tempo Map by tapping on beat one throughout, then send that to BB and work from there. Might solve this. --Mac

Hi lingyai, -- Noel96, I did not see a pm from you, but I did follow the steps you mentioned re resetting all the bars. I'm not quite sure what happened to the original message I wrote for you. I have now sent another private message with a link to the file I modified. Unfortunately, this did not work -- while it enables the entire realstyle including the pedal steel to play, the result is out of tune and sync with the audio file. Another possible reason there is a synch problem is because the BIAB style that has been added to the song is one that has 4 beats in a bar and the song itself has 3 beats to the bar. This mismatch has the potential to create issues. I notice that you mentioned that you don't have a great deal of musical schooling. There's nothing wrong with that BIAB is a great tool for music enthusiasts whatever there musical background! To try and help you understand this situation a little better, I need to enter the "Music Schooling" arena for a bit. Please accept my apologies in advance if, any time, I sound patronising. It is unintentional. TIME SIGNATURESThese tell a song how many beats are in a bar. From a listening perspective, this is determined by counting the beats from strong beat to strong beat (since every bar starts with a strong beat). By far the large majority of songs are written with 4 distinctive, evenly spaced beats to a bar. There are millions of examples of 4/4 time signatures but the one that springs to mind while I'm tying is The Beatles' "Help". ... link to "Help"The next most common time signature is waltz time which has 3 evenly spaced beats in a bar. The song that springs to mind here is "You Light Up My Life" ... link to "You Light Up My Life".There are also other, less used time signatures in the music world but I'll save those for another day. BIAB STYLESFor the most part, the styles within BIAB's style picker reflect the above time signatures in that I estimate that around 98% of the styles will be one of either 4 beats to a bar or 3 beats to a bar. PG Music help users to identify these two styles by using the symbol "W" for "Waltz". Thus, wherever a "W" is seen immediately after a style's name, that style will have 3 beats to a bar. (See the image below.) If no "W" is present, then the style will have 4 beats to a bar. Any exceptions to this (which are few and far between, by the way) will be noted in the description of the style. For BIAB to work properly, it's necessary to match styles with a song's time signature. That is, if a song has 3 beats in a bar, the style chosen to back the song also needs 3 beats in a bar. In the case of the song file that you've created by importing a midi, there is a mismatch and, as mentioned before, this is what I believe is causing the problem. The song has 3 beats to a bar but the style that's been chosen has 4 beats to a bar. Trying to force a 4-beat style to function as a 3-beat style does not always work well. I've found that I always get better results by matching style with a song's time signature. In the modified file that I returned to you, I did exactly this. I matched your 3-beat song with a 3-beat style. Hope this information helps. Kind regards, Noel P.S. When I get home tonight, I'll have a play around with the audio file and the midi files that were contained in the original zip file and see if that sheds any further light on the situation.

Trying to get BB to sync up with an audio file is one of the most frustrating things I have ever attempted.
I have had people send me audio recordings and asked me to add other instruments. Many of those were recorded without a click track and as a result the tempo varies just a bit in places. However, that "just a bit" is enough to throw everything out of sync. One girl sent an audio track that wavered in it's tempo noticeably, and she managed to sing it half way between the half steps in the keys..... not to mention the background noise and room noise was substantial. I ended up asking for a better recording... one on key and with a click to keep on tempo, but that never happened. I never heard from her again.
I now ask anyone who is sending me tracks up front....to record it at a specific tempo and to use a click track to stay on the beat.
Having said that.... in some DAW's you can actually use a function that allows one to snap the audio to a beat. I don't think my DAW's have that function, maybe one of them does..... but I tend to work from clicks.
In my experience, it's better to work from a BB track with a specific tempo and key than to work the other way around from an audio recording. I will say that I have done it successfully though.... but the songs in question came from a semi-pro studio with 2 measures of count in, at a specific tempo, and on key.
If you are working in a DAW.....any DAW and are using midi and audio tracks together, you really have to pay attention to the tempo or time sig changes because audio uses points on the time line as reference and when you change the tempo, the audio points will no longer line up properly. The more edits you have in a given audio track the more you will notice this discrepancy on playback. Throw in a dozen audio tracks and you have a huge mess if you're not careful.
You can find my music at: www.herbhartley.comAdd nothing that adds nothing to the music. You can make excuses or you can make progress but not both. The magic you are looking for is in the work you are avoiding.

Hi lingyai, Apologies for taking a couple of days to get back to you but 'life' has been pulling me in a number of directions in the recent past. All is good. I've managed to get everything working as it should. The link below is to the BIAB file I created that will do the job for you. I've frozen all the tracks. ... link to BIAB fileWhen I imported the audio file, I used the settings inside the red rectangle shown on the below image. They're the same as in your ReadMe.pdf. If you want reduce the volumes on any of the tracks in the file I've created (e.g. drums), then it's necessary to 'unfreeze' that track before making the changes. Hope this helps, Noel P.S. What version of BIAB do you have?
