There was a story I heard years ago about this song. Those of you in your 50s will probably remember this hit song by Mac Davis. Apparently, he had written a string of songs which weren't getting cut, and his publisher said, "Write something wiht a hook in it" after which he wrote this song. Thought it was a cute story!

Hi Greg...

I used to watch his shoe on TV back in the middle 1970's when I lived in San Antonio, TX. In my mind's eye, he was an OK singer but a much more talented lyricist. I watched the show, primarily, for the ten minute segment at the end where he asked audience members to give him a subject line and he would extemporaneously write a partial lyric and simple melody. he was very gifted with that ability.

I'd never heard the story you referred to but I can easily believe it. I did enjoy your story - thanks! I love hearing about these inside happenings relating to the evolution of a song - like the "Scrambled Eggs" and "Yesterday" story. Won't repeat it unless someone asks as it is widely known. Best to you, Greg.

Alan

Mac, Tom Jones and Elvis used to be pretty good buddies. Could you imagine hanging out with them when they got to "pranking" each other?

Are you sure you don't have that confused with The Glen Campbell Show? I recall GC doing that as well. Perhaps they both did it.

Yeah, that section of the show was always pretty cool. For songwriters, that is a very good exercise to do from time to time. Pick a topic and write.

Mac definitely did this during his brief-lived show. He had a group of audience members sitting around in a circle with him and he would just ask them for a topic/story-line and improvise a song.

I agree with Joe that it was Mac Davis and not Glen Campbell. Glen was not known as a prolific songwriter and I can't immediately recall any of his hits that he composed himself.

An early Glen Campbell song came out of his decision to leave the Beach Boys and Brian Wilson told him it was a dumb thing to do. Glen allegedly responded with "well, I guess I must be dumb then." Brian wrote, arranged (orchestra), recorded and produced a song that Glen recorded solo titled, "I Must Be Dumb". It can be found on YouTube.

I heard Mac Davis relate how he came to write "Don't get hooked on me" in several different interviews over the years and he always attributed it as his response to the request to write something with a hook to it.

Yeah, Herb, it was definitely Mac Davis. Selected audience members sat on bleacher-like seat in a semi-circle and someone would call out a silly subject, trying to stump him. I never saw him fail ... at least on the parts that made it to air.
