When you live in Florida almost everyone is from somewhere else. So when the favorite question arises this is my long drawn out answer.

My vocals and Acoustic Guitar
Note - some of the acoustic solo is real tracks, some is me.
Comments/Suggestions always welcome.

Right Where I Belong

I was born around Wheeling W Va

down by the banks of the Ohio

Where coal smoke filled the air

When Mama said her nightly prayers

i never thought we’d leave that old dirt road

One day Dad came home said we were moving

So on up to the city we did go

Cleveland seemed real cold

be careful I was told

This way of life was different than I’d known

I can see the misty hills of W Va

Even though I know those days are gone

Every place that you’ve lived lives within ya

And right now I’m right where I belong

i went to high school in Chicago

listening to the blues all the while

Then southern illinois was like when I was a boy

The city’s fun but country’s more my style

Lived outside of Denver in the mountains

Then made my way down to Tennesee

Florida called my name and I’ve never been the same

i found the place where I was meant to be

Well written and the performance is outstanding, I can imagine you when someone ask where you are from, breaking out in tune. You need to carry a boom box around with the tracks so every time someone ask you can serenade 'em Lol, Thanks for sharing!

You swine, one listen and "everyplace you live lives within you" won't get out of my head. Seriously very very good, particularly like the doubling/harmonies. Nice one

Tom,

"...almost everyone is from somewhere else."

Hey! I went to elementary school in Avon Park! (er... and Tallahassee.. and Detroit... and Williamsport, PA...).
Born in Chicago - kindergarten in Lynchburg,VA - so we crossed paths!

Solid. Good write - you packed a lot of history in a small space.
Excellent instrumentation. Getting that fiddle to "gently get out of the way" for the vocal is never easy - great job on that. Cannot tell where the RT guitar stops and you begin - seamless! The banjo seems to be playing right here in the room with me... great mix! Nothing out of place..

"Every place that you’ve lived lives within ya
And right now I’m right where I belong"
GREAT lines!

So enjoyable.

Hi Tommy,

although this is not my genre I must say it is a very good production. Good vocals and harmonies, seamless blend between you and RT.
Enjoyable listen.

Hey Tommy...

Al here. Man, I can relate to this. I joined the Army in June of 1965. You have to fill out a life history form when you enlist. You have to list every address you ever lived at, and when. So, when I was 18 in 1965, I had lived at 21 addresses in 13 towns! Went to 5th grade in three different schools in two different towns! Etc...etc......

What a great song! Sure brings back a lot of memories as I think about all those stops along the way. The instrument selection was great and your vocals hit the nail on the head. Great stuff!!!

Really nice work Tommy, as usual! Your writing has a conversational and truthful feel that really works. Once, at a songwriting seminar, an author of a songwriting book (don't remember her name) quoted someone who said "Everybody sings, and everybody writes, but not everybody tells the truth, and the people are moved by the truth". That was almost 20 years ago but it really struck me. I don't think it means that everything you write needs to be from personal experience but more that you write what you feel, and I think you do. Take care. Greg

Robert, I'm looking for that boom box right now. Thanks for listening and commenting.

Steve, oink oink. That's thanks in piglish.

Floyd, I guess we've been around. I always like that banjo in the room on bluegrass tunes. Those things are so dang loud. Thanks for the comments.

Josie, thanks for taking the time to listen and comment.

Guenter, thanks for checking in on this one.

Dani, everybody's from somewhere. Thanks for listening.

Al, you sure have gotten around. Glad I struck a chord with you. Thanks.

Greg, that was an interesting quote. The truth seems to be the best option in all situations so why not songwriting. Thanks for listening and commenting. I appreciate it.

tommyad,

That chorus is catchy and that's a good mix of you and the RT in the solo, I think I have worked out your bit smile

Everything about this song is perfect

Keep 'em coming

Alyn

Reckon we're a bit late to highlight our favorite lines as they are, obviously, other listener's favorite lines. smile

As a couple of folks who played in BG bands for many years the first thing I thought about was how few BG songs are autobiographical....which I'm assuming this one is. So this immediately sets it apart from about 3 zillion BG songs -- and sets it apart in a good way 'cause they are fine lyrics. The vocals are out front keeping with the style of good bluegrass mixes and the backup instruments are there but not obtrusive.
It works for us!

Hey, you nailed the classic BG G run. Wish the RT track had one.

Gibson, I almost didn't post this because I could hear the difference between the real track and my guitar. Then I just said oh well. Thanks for the nice comments.

Rich, thanks for taking the time to listen and comment.

Bud and Janice, you're right the classic Lester Flatt G run is missing. That is exactly why I put my guitar part in. Yes this one is 4 chords and the truth and I'm glad the grassers think it's ok.

When we first got BIAB I was amazed at the solo RTs and generally with the rhythm instruments but the guitar is simply not mainstream BG rhythm playing. We were doing a lot of BIAB bluegrass stuff so either Janice or I would record a couple of g runs that i'd paste through the song. Her '43 18 is a BG cannon -- I'd love to have a BG guitar rhythm RT that started with her instrument.

Janice and Bud, Now that you mention it, my original idea was to paste that G run after some of the lines, but I think I forgot about it after getting obsessed with the solo. I had a D18 in 1970. What a great guitar. Unfortunately it was stolen a few years later in Chicago. At least I know what a really great one sounds like.

Mario, Thanks for your ongoing support and encouragement. I'm always glad to read your kind words.
