MIDI channels are in the range 1 - 16, but PTP allows channel 0 to be set on a MIDI track.

Does channel 0 have some special significance in this context? What I am seeing is that events on the channel 0 track are being sent to MIDI channel 1. This can get confusing to a MIDI novice who creates (say) three MIDI tracks with channel numbers 0, 1 and 2 and expects them to behave as three independent tracks (e.g. for patch selection).

Thanks,
John

John,
What I believe you'll find is that a 0 means that no particular MIDI channel has been selected. You are correct that MIDI channels are 1-16, so having a 0 midi channel will default to the first channel.

So, you would want to change the MIDI channel on that track.

Furthermore, if you're doing three tracks, the MIDI channel IN NO WAY needs to line up with the track number. So, if you're doing three tracks, you can use midi channels 8,13, and 2! The only real exception to that is that if you are using channel 10, for most synths that is an automatic selection of the drum channel, but that's not a hard and fast rule, either. You can put drums on any channel, and any instrument on channel 10. But, that's they way General MIDI maps it, and most files are written, and it's pretty much a standard.

Hope this helps.

Gary

John,

The "0" is on purpose. That way, you can select which channel/track you want to assign in PT. Be sure to use edit-rechannel if you are going to save it.

Thanks for the responses.

This is the way I now look at it: having the channel number 0 set on a MIDI track means "let PTP make an assignment of the channel number for note inserted in the track" while setting a real channel number in the range 1 - 16 means "force the channel number for events in the track to the given value".

Regards,
John

Hi John,

Channel 0 indicates that there is usually more than one channel of data in the track. If you re-set the channel number then all the data will play the one instrument you select for that channel. You need to expand the Channel 0 track by using Edit > Extract Channels to Tracks which will separate the individual channel data to separate tracks according to the Midi channels used. You can now allocate instruments to each channel.

I hope this helps.
