I finally took some of the advice you guys gave me and gave Reaper a try. Still in the evaluation period (so far about 2 weeks), but I really like this program.
I noticed in the Reaper manual, there is an option to download this program and run it from a secondary hard drive or even a jump drive/memory stick.
I travel a lot and the hard drive that PG supplied is great. It allows me to take this as I travel and use it on my work PC without creating issues. My question - has anyone installed Reaper on the same portable hard drive as our BIAB/RB programs? It would be great to have it all in one place. I think there may be room, but I would probably need to save my work on a separate memory stick to avoid filling it up.
Any experiences would be appreciated.

Many programs give you a choice of drives upon which to install, but still insist on writing some files to the boot drive. Some don't even ask, and install to the boot drive no matter what you want. I don't have Reaper so I can't answer your question about that particular program, but why not just try it?
The size of flash drives can be amazingly large now, like 128 GB (though those are still somewhat expensive). Your idea is a good one, to travel light with the programs you want. It's amazing we can even consider doing that now.

As I understand it Reaper has an install option which permits it to run fully independent from any registry entries. But why? the program size is 314 MB on my HD. By todays standards that is small. I run both Reaper (on the HD) and BIAB fully on an External Drive on my MS Surface.

I run both Reaper (on the HD) and BIAB fully on an External Drive on my MS Surface. Dan, This is so that it is fully portable You can truly run it from a jump drive without needing to mess with the registry. I've done this with Reaper. I have it installed a jump drive with it on it in my Samson USB microphone bag. I used it just once when at last minute before leaving on a trip, I decided to toss in the mic into my suitcase. I was able to record a demo lyric and percussion track (smack on pillows and pizza box) using Reaper on the jump drive, my work laptop, and that Samson mic (which has it's own headphone output). Now I just use Garageband on my iPhone - much more capable in a much smaller package!
