We are considering adding a drummer to our existing BIAB duo (female vocalist and me on keys/vocals)...has anyone successfully used BIAB tracks with a 'live' drummer?

I took a few BIAB tracks and muted all but the drums, and played left handed bass on the keyboard, but having been spoiled by my BIAB 'band' full sound for years, it sounded very weak/empty....

It can present some challenges. I have had a real drummer join my sets over the years. As one should expect they can't drive the tempo! Which apparently they are used to doing. Instead they have to listen to the backing just like the rest of the band. Other than that, it has generally worked out.

Yeah, I think the biggest problem with a live drummer is that they absolutely MUST follow the tempo and if you mute the drums in the BB mix, you will need to get them some sort of click track to follow.

A live drummer will vary their tempo throughout the song but when playing with tracks, that is a formula for disaster. It's not impossible to do, you just need to get them a soloed click track to follow.

If the drummer in question has a good, solid sense of timing and keeps the tempo well, it may be possible (you need to experiment in practice sessions) to simply let BB provide the count in ticks for one measure. As long as the balance of the BB tracks are easily heard and well defined to the drummer, there is a fairly good chance they can follow it just fine.

You might try to do what they do with the orchestras on cruise ships and other venues.

Record a click track, sort of a metronome track with the first beat of the measure being a different pitch and feed that to the drummer via an ear bud.

You might try also mixing in a little bit of the rest of the track in that feed, but that would depend on the drummer.

This would make it much easier for the drummer to stay on tempo, and that would let him think more about playing tastefully and helping the music.

My experience with drummers and backing tracks echoes everybody else's comments... and I'd add that the drummer tends to drown out the click track and take over the beat, leading the whole song down the toilet.

If I were to try this again, I'd get some kind of light that follows the beat of the click track, and everybody in the band could follow the light's tempo, which could never be drowned out.

"You're a drummer, aren't you?"

"Duh, yeah. How'd you know?"
