Don't worry, I won't flood the board with all my tunes for www.rpmchallenge.com this month (ha, ha). Pretty standard country formula song (Verse-Chorus-Verse-Chorus-Break-Bridge-Chorus). I modulated at the end to give it a little more drive. I might try and add more electric rhythm guitar early on and percussion to give it even more pep, but I have to set it aside for right now -- I've got 12 songs to record before the end of the month. MP3: http://www.soundclick.com/share?songid=6470939Kevin ************************************** Going Down to Poplar Drive© Kevin Emmrich 2009Kevin Emmrich: Vocals, acoustic guitar, electric guitar Colin Garvey: Backing vocals *Steve Hinson: Pedal Steel (#621) *TJ Klay: Harmonica (#602) *PG Music: Drums, midi piano *Jason Roller: Rhythm Acoustic Guitar (#406) Rob Stuart: Backing Vocals *Dow Tomlin: Bass (#521) Driving around, the top’s flipped down I got a feeling something big’s gonna happen Everyone says there’s nothing to do in this town But I know that just isn’t true Cause I know what my baby and I are gonna do We’re Going down to Poplar Drive gonna take my girl along for a ride Hair thrown back and we’re feeling alive we’re going down to Poplar Drive going down to Poplar Drive Get to where we’re going and w're feeling so free I’m looking at her and she’s looking at me We’re laughing at all those folks who say that you gotta leave town to be cool I guess we’re happy being fools, cause We’re Going down to Poplar Drive gonna take my girl along for a ride Hair thrown back and we’re feeling alive we’re going down to Poplar Drive going down to Poplar Drive (Instrumental Break) (Bridge) So it’s been 10 years and we’re still in this town We’re still laughing, we haven’t forgot how I say “What do you want to do with the kids tonight?” She’s just gives me that look and says “How about…” Going down to Poplar Drive gonna take my girls along for a ride Hair thrown back and we’re feeling alive we’re going down to Poplar Drive going down to Poplar Drive ------------------------------------------------ * Courtesy of PG Music BIAB/RB/Realtracks

Hey Kevin. Anyone ever accuse you of sounding like Glenn Frye? You've got a bit of an Eagles sound going on there. Good on ya Mate. This is very well produced.
I assume you're playing the lead guitar on this?

That was tight! Really professional sounding. I liked the key changes at the end. Great mix. Wouldn't change a thing. It is so good to hear what everyone is able to accomplish, it gives me something to shoot for. Good luck!

Reminds me of a Tom Petty goes country sound. Nice production.

Nice job Kevin . . . Poplar Drive? Is that a local make out place? Just wondering.

Russell: I'd take sounding like Eagles any day! Yes that's me doing the short lead break until the harp player finds the right harmonica to play. Thanks for stopping by and listening. Ian: Quote:

Ha! You say that now -- but what if the entire Off-Topic page 1 was filled with kevin emmrich songs? The only reason I am posting these here is because they lean very heavily on BIAB/realtracks. I'll post them, but I'll probably spread out the time frame. Actually, when I am all done with the RPM CD, I'll set up a soundclick radio station and maybe ask folks to do a 30 second per song test to test the overall flow of the CD before I get it mastered or spend any money doing something dumb!
Mario: Thanks for the kind words. I'm new here, but I've been made to feel welcome.
Luvs3rds: It's hard to believe I have been using BIAB/RT for only six weeks or so. I think that really shows the power of the RT's stuff. I have only scratched the surface of BIAB, though -- right now I've been only able to do one song (the bluegrass number) where it actually sounded just like the song as I play it on acoustic. On the other tunes, I haven't learned to twist BIAB to my will and BIAB actually becomes a bit of a co-writer supplying part of the overall feel of the tune. Since I am under time pressure, I am letting BIAB do its thing and so far it has worked out pretty well.
Sundance: Thanks for listening and commenting.
Danny C.: Poplar Drive: I don't know where that came from. During FAWM 2008, I found a challenge that said write a song with the name of a street in the title. This is what came out (I did have to re-write it to fit with the music this time around, though). I guess it could be a make out spot, but probably a more general purpose type place, since the guy is taking his family there now (I guess, I don't know -- it's all made up)
It's interesting, this song started out as a throw away type tune because I had 11 tunes, but 2 of them I wasn't going to re-do the existing backing tracks with BIAB. To meet the spirit of the RPM challenge, I wanted at least 10 songs that were completely generated/recorded in February (all of these 12 songs have been knocking around for a few months to a year or so). So I decided to break this one out and enter it into BIAB, As I made up the "play order", this throw away tune kept moving up and now it is probably going to be the first song on the CD.
Thanks to all for listing and commenting.
Kevin

Kevin, When the challenge is over I hope you will post your thoughts on the experience of doing this. The thought of writing 10 new songs in 28 days and posting for all world to hear strikes me as both thrilling and scary! Hats off!

I did the RPM Challenge in 2007 and 2008 (and FAWM in 2008). For those, I wrote all new songs and recorded them in February. This time around, since I got BIAB, I decided to go back and pick the "best" songs that I hadn't "released" yet and record/re-record those for RPM. While RPM encourages that you write all new material, it is not mandatory (it is mandatory for FAWM, however). So this year is mostly focusing on the recording/production side. Six or Seven of the tunes are coming from this year's 50/90 challenge (or for me 20/90), one from FAWM 2008 and the rest scattered from the last year or two. I had to make a choice of going country for RPM 2009 or more rock (or mixed). I decided to go for country, because I think the songs were a little stronger -- but that is always open to interpretation. I think a couple of people from here are doing the www.fawm.org thing this year, maybe they will chime in on their experiences. Kevin
