Please excuse my newbie question but here goes---I would like to convert a WAV file of a song to the sheet music for that song so I can print it out. Is that possible and if so, please give me simple directions. I am very much a newbie at BIAB. Thanks.

I don't think it can do that.
I've heard that you can however, take a wave and use BB to make a midi file and a midi file can easily be converted into a printable sheet music format.
the big question will be .... with all of the conversions and the inaccuracy involved in the wave to midi conversion...... how musically accurate the resultant sheet music will be.
I think Melodyne can do similar things, but again.... the accuracy is the big question. I have never experimented with either to attempt this.

There's a program called Melodyne that MAY be able to convert that WAV to editable notes. I don't know whether it would produce sheet music. (I'm going to be embarrassed if I learn that BIAB can do this.) Now that you've asked the question, I will be interested in the answer.

Richard yep, I have Melodyne Editor and... it's supposed to be able to do this. I have never used it for that, haven't even attempted it just to experiment. Like so many of the features in BB and other programs, if I don't need them I never bother with them. I would suspect it would work better on a solo guitar track.... one note played at a time, verses using it to render the midi to a piano track or an entire mixed song.

As stated Melodyne Editor can do this, see here: http://www.celemony.com/userforum/viewtopic.php?f=10&t=9599But as stated in that forum thread you may have to do some editing to the MIDI file, save the file then print it out using a notation program. But, and this is a big but, Melodyne, like any wav to MIDI conversion program will convert everything from the wav into one big MIDI file. That is everything in the song, bass, drums, vocals etc will be in one file. If you play that MIDI file as is it will all have one sound, say a piano for instance. It will not play different sounds. You would have to know what each note each instrument is playing at any given time and separate them into different MIDI files if you want different sounds or parts. If you can do this it would be easier just to manually transcribe each part. Melodyne Editor works great for one polyphonic instrument though. I have taken wav bass parts, converted them into MIDI parts and used different MIDI bass sound sources. I have also taken a rhythm guitar part and changed a note or two to turn a G major into a Gm7. I have also taken a rhythm guitar part and converted it other sounds like a Zither. A Zither sound playing along with a guitar is really nice. I hope this helps.

Richard,
No need to be embarrassed. BIAB cannot convert a wav to sheet music. It can covert a midi file to sheet music, though.

This has been a wished for holy grail for years. Take one of my fav CD's and convert one of the cuts to a score? How cool would that be? That certainly would kill all the music transcription books.
Unfortunately, outside of a million dollar university computer lab it's not possible. Not to say never of course, but not yet.

Well, then... ...use Melodyne to convert WAV to MIDI, then BIAB to convert MIDI to sheet music. But unfortunately, the last time (about 8 months ago) I've tested the Melodyne function for a complete song the result was still unsatisfactry. Maybe that was because I am unskilled using Melodyne, I only had the 30-day-trial period at that time and decided to buy the program later.

What's the name of the song? Have you tried searching for a midi version of that song? There are a lot of free midi stuff out there that might get you close to what you want to do. Once you have a midi version, you can open it up in software like Music Time Deluxe and cut out everything but the parts you want. I think Power Tracks Pro does a pretty good midi seperation of tracks also.

It's only been two days so lets give them a little more time to respond. Maybe he has a job that keeps him away from his computer for a few days. Maybe he's on vacation or worst sick or in an accident. I'd wait a few more days before jumping all over him or her.

I let a guy cut in front of me on the highway the other day in busy traffic, and I got no wave! Where's my wave?

I for one and happy for the question and all the responses. I've composed a couple songs using BIAB and need to create lead sheets and music notation for the musicians I'm working with.
I'm downloading Melodyne Editor in hopes that might do the trick.
Thanks Dwight
Spoke to soon... Melodyne is VERY expensive. Ugh, the search continues. Good day.

You can use the Audio Chord Wizard tool to evaluate the wave file and develop a chord sheet. Isn't that what the original post requested?

Spoke to soon... Melodyne is VERY expensive. Ugh, the search continues. Good day. Oh, you want something that's been wished for since the dawn of computers for FREE?? Yeah, don't we all eh? This is a very complex high level function and afaik Melodyne is as good as it gets right now and no, it ain't free. But, if you've composed the songs then you know the parts but in order for Biab to print it all out, you have to enter those chords and notes as midi, it sounds like you've recorded everything as audio? Do it again with midi. It doesn't matter how crappy sounding the synth is, all you need is the midi data and Biab can print out what you want. Bob
