Hello, I've been using BIAB for many years, but am just getting started with doing some vocal recording. I've recorded a dry vocal and need some help figuring out how to apply a reverb effect and just generally working with the vocal track within BIAB. I've read the instructions in the help file, but still am feeling a little flummoxed. This would seem to be a really basic type of question, and for that I apologize, but I just need a little help. Thanks ever so.

The RealBand DAW included with BIAB is ideal for further processing and adding effects to your BIAB tracks.

So long as you save a good copy of the original vocal track, you are free to experiment. That's when the fun TRULY begins!

You can always add the reverb to the track after the fact. In fact, that is the preferred way. Keep the tracks (all of them) dry and un-effected.

Add the FX as plug ins and feel free to experiment. You can always delete them if you don't like what you have and don't know how to get back to solid ground. Then simply start over by inserting it again.

My rule of thumb on reverb is.... select the kind you want.... dark plate, bright plate, hall, small room etc.... then turn it up during playback until you can hear the reverb...then back it back down until it goes away..... as a rule of thumb, you are now probably set pretty much where it needs to be.

Remember that as you add reverb to busses and master, they will ADD to what you have in a track so it may be necessary to go back to the tracks and turn it down even further, and perhaps to remove it altogether.

Janet, like you I am new to using effects. Starting with dry tracks and adding effects later gives you the capability to try many effects, or one effect many different ways, so you can determine what works best within the framework of the song.

I have found on individual tracks that if you're wanting to use reverb to fill empty space between words or notes delay may work better. If you want to bring a track more to the front, increase the apparant loudness of a track or otherwise add omph to a track then short delays (less than 30 milliseconds) are definetely your friend.

If the track is a background track, like a background vocal, adding reverb can be a very effective way to push a track back into the mix. Remember though that natural reverb cuts much of a track's high frequencies. One way to have reverb but keep the clarity of the high frequencies is to duplicate the track, run a 100% wet mix on the duplicate track and 100% dry original track then adjust the gain of both to taste. Panning each adds some seperation between the tracks.

Don't overlook Realband (it came with BiaB) as an option. Someone mentioned RB above, wanted to make sure you saw it.

It makes recording tracks much more intuitive in my eyes.

Everything gets laid out in front of you in RB, so for some it's a perfect move.
Many here get the basic song in BiaB, then add audio in a DAW like Realband. Mind you, Realband supports most BiaB features too, like the chords, generating parts, etc.

I do not work here, but the benefits are still awesome

Thanks to everyone. I finally figured out how to find the plugin with the reverb effect! My first attempt came out far better than I expected. (I have fooled around with reverb before in other sequencers.) I saved it as a preset, but not sure how to find the saved preset now! The second time, I thought I was using my previous preset, but the result wasn't as good, so I'm not really sure I did it the same way. Anyway, I hope to get the hang of it pretty soon and will try to post a sample. This is a great forum.

Presets are normally displayed from a drop down in the top tool bar of the plug in.

Remember.... a preset is simply a starting point. Tweeze the settings and feel free to save the new one as a new preset.

Some of my presets are now refined enough that very little tweezing is required.

Hi Jazzi,

I, too, always save my tracks as dry and then add effects (reverb, delay, eq, etc.) later. This allows me a whole lot of control over the sounds when I'm mixing.

When I save my own presets, I always use my initials and the song's name. For example "NA - Anything Can Happen". Since the programs I use file presets alphabetically, this means I can always find them under "n" and the name of the song allows me to go and listen to that song to see how that preset sounds.

All the best,
Noel
