I'm working on a tune that has shots near the end of the verses and they work fine beneath vocals. However, this is kind of 50's tune and I want to insert a tenor sax solo for one of the verses. It's rocking all through the verse and then it gets to the shots and the solo comes to a screeching halt instead of playing on top of all the dead space created by the shots.
I see, in the documentation, that you can exclude piano, bass and drums from shots but I can't see how or if you can do that for the soloist.

To do it the easy way just use Realband or :
If you want to make your own or modify an existing Soloist, use the Soloist Maker (edit) module.
You can press F5 or..
"Breaks" for only some instruments
You can specify that some instruments not be affected by the break.
The coded names for the instruments are:
B for Bass
D for Drums
P for Piano
G for Guitar
S for Strings
To type a rest for all instruments on a C chord type
C.
To exempt instruments, add their letters following the break. For example, typing
C.bd (Bass & Drums will play only)
will put a rest on all instruments EXCEPT the bass and drums, or to put a held chord for all instruments except the piano, type
C...p (Piano only track will play during hold)

I did see the...
B for Bass
D for Drums
P for Piano
G for Guitar
S for Strings
...as well as how to enter that with the dots, but I don't see a choice for not applying the shot to the soloist. The S in the exclusion list is for strings.
Is there a way to use the same notation to exclude the soloist?

A couple of solutions spring to mind ...
1. Generate what's on the Soloist track with no shots applied and then freeze the Soloist, put the shots back in and regenerate the song.
2. Swap the instrument on the Soloist track with one of the other instrumental tracks and then use the exclusion. For example if a solo guitar is on the Soloist track, put the guitar on the String track, put what's on the String track on the Soloist track and then use the ..S exclusion for the String track.

P.S. When midi solos and melodies are used, shots and holds don't impact on the Soloist and Melody tracks because these tracks were designed to be instrumental tracks and not backing tracks. Realtracks are affected because they can be placed on the Soloist and Melody tracks as accompaniment.

Totally agree Rutherford.
It would be good to also include the melody track.
I had never thought of Noel's suggestion, so will try that when the occasion next arises.
