When I export as midi, also a Real Drum wav file is rendered. The midi file also includes a midi drum track. Understand that. But is the drum pattern the same? I know it sounds different because it depends on the connected drum.

Hi Leo,

In relation to Realdrums, the midi track is not related to the Realdrums drum track (as far as I'm aware at least).

Regards,
Noel

I thought it would be so. Thanks Noel.

I want to import the midi into my DAW and assign the instruments I want. I know, it can be done in BIAB, but I have more flexibility in my DAW. I wanted to use the midi drums, but the Real Drums are sounding better. And somehow different.

Also studying WAV to MIDI conversion.

Yeah, the answer to that is "no". Midi and real tracks will not be the same. No matter if its the drums or piano or anything else.

The nice thing about the midi track is that it can be easily edited and you can assign any drum synth to play it.

Early in my experience with BB/RB I was hoping that the RB tracks would have a midi equivalent somewhere so I could apply a piano synth to get pristine sounding tracks....... but alas..... that was not to be.

LeoK, are you exporting a MIDI track or are you exporting a RealTrack and looking for a MIDI file?

If you are indeed exporting a MIDI track via the DAW plugin and getting a wav file in your DAW make sure that the DAW plugin option for send MIDI as wav, or something like that-I am not at my music computer, is not checked.

Like it already has been said if you are exporting a RealTRack and expectly a MIDI track it ain't gonna happen.

I do exactly what you are trying to do on virtually all of my songs by using MIDI drums. MIDI drums may not sound that great in BiaB if you are using an inexpensive GM sound source but they come alive in a DAW when really good sound sources are used.

The best wav to MIDI converter IMHO is the Melodyn Editor. You may want to check it out.

I hope this helped.

I guess Do You Hear What I Hear was a bad song choice!

The MIDI drums in BIAB are based on the drum patterns programmed for the underlying MIDI style. When a RealDrum (which is audio, not MIDI) is used instead (either explicitly in the style, or via automatic substitution, or via explicit substitution), it is overlaid on top of the underlying MIDI drum track (effectively replacing it). That's why the MIDI and RealDrum are two completely different things and could possibly sound similar, but likewise could sound completely different. Using a RealDrum is essentially muting the underlying MIDI drum style and playing the RealDrum instead. The notes from the underlying style are still there, which is why you get them when you drag and drop or render to MIDI, but have no relation at all to the riffs in the RealDrum that was used.

I hope that made sense.

Guitarhacker: Got it. It looks you wanted the same.

Mario: I am exporting a complete song as midi. But because Real Drums is not midi, BIAB creates a Real Drum wav file. I was interested in the RD because it sounds better and is different. My only options are using the midi drums (which are less good) or the RD wav in my daw.

John: Realizing that now. Also figured out that converting wav to midi is problematic. I think Toontrack Drumtracker could do it, but that is a 100 dollar purchase.

That's much cheaper than a $400 purchase for Melodyne if it actually works. Melodyne works. Our toys cost money.

Real Tracks/Drums are awesome and terrible at the same time. Awesome because they're studio tracks played by real session players in real time. Terrible because they're recorded by real session players in real time.

They can't be edited down to the individual note or part of a drumkit level. As audio files you can cut/paste and move sections around, apply EQ to try to bring out the snare or kick but that's it. Midi allows you to do anything you want to the track but it's midi, just computer commands telling a synth what to play. Not real at all but a talented midiot using a top notch synth with a good sound library which means more money, ($50-100 for a basic GM synth won't cut it}, can make midi tracks shine.

Until you can pay for studio time with top players, everything's a trade off. Don't want to be a pro with midi and spend big bucks on synths? Use the RT/RD's and live with great sound but what you hear is what you get, there's limited editing available because they're prerecorded audio files.

One point about underlying midi files associated with Real Tracks. They do exist on many RT's but not all. Look in the help files under Real Charts. Somebody had to go into those audio tracks and manually transcribe the part into Biab's notation function in order to produce the chart. That's not a complete midi file (it's just the note information only) but it's a start because you can take that midi note info and import it into your DAW but you then have to add the CC's for volume, expression, and any other things like pitch bend, modulation and the like.

I tried this a few times, and I don't think even the timing is close to the audio. I suspect the transcriptions were intended primarily for notation purposes (hence "charts") and are - effectively - strongly quantized.

Yes, the transcriptions are there so that you can see what the musician is doing, not to provide an exact MIDI rendering of the audio performance.

I think if they actually tried to make the transcription exactly like the audio, it would probably look something like this:

In the early days of RealTracks, PG Music hired people to do transcriptions. I can tell you, mine were spot on. The MIDI accurately matched the audio when played together. I can't vouch for others, though.

I did electric guitar and sax parts, and the hardest task was matching bends and scoops in MIDI. All you can do is a bunch of short notes to simulate one. The rest was straightforward enough. I assume they have better software now to do this job, but the process is still proprietary.
