OK I love the new mixer for creating songs BUT after the arrangement has been completed and frozen the mixer takes too much of the page. What use does it offer after the song has been completed and ready for performance.
I would suggest an option to hide the mixer and have the the "Song" area remain to identify the song and styles being used and also keep the"Transport" area to have control of the song.
For me the Full Screen option is not a good solution because there are no Transport options and also the shortcut options are not as workable.
In BiaB 2014, the main mixer cannot be controlled separately, like in previous versions. All you can do to get rid of the mixer is remove the entire top half controls section of the screen (Control-T), but you can just have the small mixer window if you want (Window > Mixer).
What you are asking for would be much better and the right way to go.

When I first saw that new interface in videos, I just presumed that section was detached and could be moved to wherever you wanted or, as you suggest, switched off, but I guess someone at PG is still stuck in good-ol' DOS Land

This was an area mentioned by PG Music for future improvement when the new 2014 GUI overhaul was first released.
Yes, IIRC there were some early teething problems with restoring from the full screen chord sheet view, and further improvements were mentioned by PGM. I somehow expected that this would be as part of a future release patch for 2014. It seems that it never happened.

Actually, on a tablet (in portrait mode) the mixer gets in the way of muting the melody. This is principally what I do when playing along with BIAB on a tablet.
