I keep running into this problem.
1. Have a song composed. 2. Have a track available, (strings, "white color") 3. Right click/assign real track player, (i.e. Guitar, country cowboy 165) 4. Generate track now 5. Nothing. . . Track stays unassigned, no RT player??
6. Tried erasing track, thought there was some latent data on there, or something. . .

One factor that can cause that is if that instrument is toggled off in the "save with patches & harmony" dialog. I just confirmed, so might be worth checking. -Ron
FWIW, those toggles are more powerful than might appear. I'd posted before that they can mute a track in real time, not just when saving. Now it appears their influence can extend beyond simple muting.

Well, that is exactly how I was told to save when I had RT's in the song. I guess what my problem will be then, is most of the stuff I work on is not done when I have to save and go to bed or whatever. So I may re-open at a later time and indeed want to "change things around" some more. What is the best way to handle songs that are going to be in various stages of completion for say , a week. I want to save all the things I have tweaked, of course , so I don't have to start totally over with the mixing and such. That is one reason I haven't saved as a WAV early on, because I still want to separate everything out upon re-open, and continue editing.

So you're saying that was the problem?
"Told?" If you're thinking that saving via that dialog saves RT wavs just generated for the song, not so. To save RTs as wavs, use the context (right click) menu associated with the instrument.Quote:

The (toggled on) attributes of the song will be saved with that dialog. So you're not losing tweaks. Even RT assignments will be saved, just not the wavs. Remember, should you choose to save an RT to wav at some point, it's not locked in stone. You can replace/regenerate in a later session. Or rename it on disk (for storage), and it won't autoload with the song.
Hope I've got that right. Post back if I'm not understanding. -Ron

Ron;
Yes, that was the problem. Thank you for responding. To back up a bit, at first I was just "saving" or "saving as" and that was not the way to apparently keep the chosen RT's with the song. I do need more schooling in the "save as wav", probably. I have used RB very few times. I will have to devote more time getting familiar with the benefits of it. I have been trying to get as much done with BB as I can, because I am more familiar with it. But I do as others I'm sure, and start a song, then look and it's midnight, and I have to get up and work in the morning. So I want to come back to a song and keep editing, later or course. I guess I looked at saving to WAV as more of a FINAL thing. Maybe this is not so. All I want to do is save it in whatever way is most logical to come back later and not only have what I've done still be there, but have the choice to change out instruments, effects, volumes and all, until I feel the song is as good as I'm going to get it. (Musicians seem to never be happy with it however, but at some point we all have to say, "That's it, already.")
I have saved a few to WAV, in order to put on a CD to give to friends, etc. When I loaded that file back into BB, it seemed like it did not show all the chords and tracks etc. as it did before. Maybe there is another button I should push to load it into BB as it was? " Is that what you meant by: it's not locked in stone. You can replace/regenerate in a later session. " ?
Thank you in advance for the help.

I think you may be referring to the process of rendering the whole file to wav. I was referring to RT assignment to an instrument, and the saving of a generated wav for that instrument. The assignment itself will stick with the song on saving. But the wav associated with that RT will not. You have to save it explicitly and separately. So if you get a generation you want to keep, you need to save it as mentioned above. I think I was wrong about the renaming bit. Even the default named RT won't load with the song. (I was thinking of the standard audio track, which will load automatically if it has the same name as the song. See below.) But you can change the name of that wav from the default, and hence iteratively build a collection of wavs for that RT if you want. (And of course, you can always change the RT assignment as well.) That's why I say it's not etched in stone.
It may be helpful to keep in mind that RT instruments are no different from midi instruments when viewed in the context of the core function: auto-accompaniment. ie. They are all regenerated when you hit play.
Don't know what was going on with chords not reloading. The mgu or sgu file should contain that info when saved, regardless of whether there was rendering or saving of wavs.
Here's some info from the help file:
"Saving Your RealTracks
The RealTracks performance is not saved with the Band-in-a-Box MGU file. This is because the Band-in-a-Box MGU file only contains chords/melody/lyrics (and an optional audio track WAV file)
As with other MIDI Band-in-a-Box parts and RealDrums, the RealTracks be can saved by
1. Rendering the performance to a WAV file, or
2. separate WAV files.
Technical Tip: If you want to permanently attach a RealTracks WAV file to a MySong.MGU song, you could render to separate WAV files, and then rename the RealTracks WAV file MySong.WAV. Then the RealTracks will be on the Audio track."
HTH -Ron

Ron;
Thank you for answering in detail. I am trying to learn this stuff as fast as I can because I like making music not fighting with all the details. But one must, to a certain extent to get the basics of any program. BB is just better than others I have used, but different also. There was another auto-accompany program I used alot ( starts with a "J") that allows you to save individual tracks when you get a compose you like, and only re-compose tracks, and portions of tracks until you get something you like. I am just used to that I guess. But with the RT's in the picture, I will never go back to that program. BB is superior now, in it's field, and I'm sure will only get better. I think I just need to read what you have provided, and it will solve the problems I have been having. I got so excited when I got BB, that I just kind of blundered ahead because I don't like reading manuals. Although I have found much more help on this forum than reading the manual twice! I'm now ready to get into the vocal end of things, and am going to tackle the TC harmonizer and all of that.
Thank you again, you and the others have cleared up much.
