Eddie, I have yet to hear a decent sounding Fender acoustic guitar. Go for some type of narrow waist guitar (just about anything but dreadnought style) and if 3/4 scale is the thing, parlor guitars are the ticket. I have my cousin's Baby Taylor at home right now, and unfortunately, it needs a shim job on the neck. So it's hard to judge the sound quality of it. It's an interesting little guitar, as they don't brace the back, but get the stiffness needed by making it a rounded back (nothing as extreme as an ovation/applause). There is also the 'big baby taylor'. Now, if you want to travel to the land of the north you can make a few hour trip to one of the meccas of acoustic guitars in the entire world - Elderly Instruments. Be wary, this is one of those places that pulls on your wallet. I like it even better than Gruhn Guitars, in Nashville TN, which is also a sort of mecca. Don't think that everything is high priced, but guaranteed everything will be well looked after in the used department. The thing is that if you buy used from them, you are taking on very little risk if the guitar is handed back to you because you'll be able to sell it for nearly what you bought it for. http://www.elderly.com/Elderly is one of the things I miss the most about living in Michigan. I have a Fender acoustic-electric and a Taylor acoustic-electric... in some songs I actually prefer the Fender. And the action on the Fender is much better than on the Taylor, even after having the Taylor professionally set up. The intonation on the Taylor is better though...

That's why I agreed with Guitarhacker who recommended USED higher up in thread. My first and preferred option, and one I will always recommend (if possible), is the the option that allows for a hands-on try/test/eval before any other buying option. I don't care WHO the seller is, especially if guitar is "pre-owned" and only played by little old lady on Sundays. It will be interesting to see what she does end up with, so Eddie can revisit this thread later and update us - after all, I think most sizes, scale lengths, mfg's, and sellers have been recommended (expect maybe Tommy Emmanuel's favored Maton guitars )

Eddie I am late to the party, but my wife bought one of these, and i have played it, and for the cash it is pretty darned good. Smaller in size a tad, and it definitely has a beginner friendly neck. It come in the package with a really nice learning package. You might try something like the Epiphone Caballero. It is not made anymore -- correction, while verifying this statement I found that they have have a 50 year anniversary model: http://www.epiphone.com/Products/Acoustic-Electric/Ltd-Ed-1964-Caballero.aspx. The advantage is, it is a regular flat top but with a Spanish guitar sized body. Other choices would be other Spanish guitars fitted for steel strings. The difference is the neck. On a regular Spanish guitar the fretboard is flat, regular flat top guitars have an arched fretboard. Willie Nelson plays a guitar made for classical music. You also can see the relatively small body there. Others have already pointed to 3/4 size or 1/2 size guitars. Good luck finding the instrument with success built in.

I would check out the Eastman E10oo. It sells new for about $1000. I have owned their violins and mandolins, and they give your more than your moneys worth. Easy to resell as well. Unless you are very lucky, you probably won't find a Martin or Taylor guitar in your price range.
Before I bought an instrument, I would hunt around for a used instrument first. Lots of people expect to learn to play an instrument in a short time, become discouraged, and sell their instrument. Save yourself a couple of hundred dollars. Usually the case and accessories are included at no cost.
