Win 7 Ultimate, Intel CPU, 16 Gb RAM, 128 Gb SSD/1 Tb HD.

Win 7 is a fully authorized new installation. When I attempt to navigate using WE it says: Drive [X]:\[Directory] is not accessible. Access denied. I can navigate perfectly well within other programs which have their own browsers.

If I have to reinstall, can I do so over the existing version, or am I going to have to do it from the ground up? (Yuk.)

Thanks,

Richard

Is it just a few specific folders or the whole drive?

You may need to "Take Ownership" - if you do make sure you include sub folders - this is a known bug in Win7 (and Vista and presumably win8)

Lawrie, it's everything on both drives. Do I just Google what you said, or is there more to it?

HI Ryzard is your user account an administrator account? If not it should be. Control Panel/ User accounts - change account type.

Which drive do you mean? If it is a non system drive it might have gone down,v (or not be plugged in too well) you can check it in Windows here.

File permissions are about who sees what. Right click on the offending folder go to properties/ security

Check these out buddy:

Check the ownership:
Open WE
Right click C:\ drive
Click Sharing and Security
Click Security Tab
Click the Advanced Button
Click the Owner Tab
Check the current owner (should be the Administrators Group)
If it isn't, then select Administrators Group from the lower dialogue window and also tick the "Replace owner..." check box and then click OK

If the Administrators group isn't available for some reason, you can also select yourself if you are the only user.

If you do succeed in applying the Administrators Group, you may then need to re-apply ownership of your "home" folder.

You can also consider:

Well, the next thing that happened was weird, but in a good way. I was going to report that when I right clicked as instructed, I got a message that said Explorer had stopped functioning; then another that said it was restarting; and then it would shut down. That all stopped and it seems to be working fine now.

In between your replies and this response I ran a MS Security Essentials scan, then D/Led and installed MBAM and ran it. MBAM found two threats, which it quarantined. I haven't restarted yet, but everything seems to be in order. Of course, I will let you know if that changes.

Thanks, guys!

Yup, sounds like something was dorking (technical term) with your system.
