Here an odd one. I created a song in BIAB that uses MIDI drums. When I import it into RealBand, the MIDI drum part is replaced / rendered with a RealDrum track. Normally, that's OK, but in this case I want the MIDI drums. I tried disabling RealDrums in the BB song. Same thing. I notice that the BB Real Drums has a check to force realDrums (of course I unchecked that). Shouldn't it have a check to force MIDI? The RealDrums being rendered are OK, but can't be manipulated like I want to...

Anyone have any suggestions / workarounds?

Thanks!

In RB, disable the RD under the song settings, and again under Prefs=>Song Generation.

I find it helpful to remind myself that some features of these programs are affected by settings for both the song and the global environment.

If the above doesn't work, you may be using a "RD style." I forget if that overrides the above settings - don't think so but maybe. (To create a midi part, of course, the style needs to contain midi drum data. From your post, that appears to be the case.) Or perhaps you rendered the RD track in BB as a wav and because it has a default name, auto-loads with the song, even in RB. I don't think that should happen, but worth checking if all else fails.

Ron (and maybe the folks at PG)...

Thanks for the tips.

I disabled RD in both the Song and Prefs. The interesting thing is that the BB song imports the MIDI drums, then the import process continues and generates a RD track and ERASES the MIDI drum track right before my eyes. Then, when I go back to check Prefs and Song Settings, RD is back to being enabled.

What's weird is I don't have RD in the BB song in the first place! So it's acting on its own course. The style is Egypt2.sty and does not have any RD in it. And... (of course I tried this first), RD is disabled on that song. I even checked the Force MIDI Drums box on the BB song settings.

As mentioned earlier, I usually prefer RD but in this case the MIDI drums are much better.

Stuck for now...

I just checked that style and it behaves normally here in RB. In fact, it's the Song Setting for RD that counts - if that's disabled, doesn't matter if the PREF setting is enabled, a generation will produce the midi drums.

Ah. By "import," you mean you are opening the mgu (or sgu) file in RB, right? But I'm not clear whether you are actually regenerating it. The mgu may contain a parameter that translates to the the RD enabling that you see. So after you've opened it and it's done whatever it does, make sure that Song setting for RD is disabled and hit that little "+" button next to "generate." Doesn't that give you the midi drum track? If not, then yeah, this is weird. Only other thing I can think is to reset to factory. You do that by removing certain files. I don't remember which, so won't guess, but a search here will find them.

BTW, if you mean to imply that you want to *preserve* the tracks as they last played in BB - ie. you don't want to regenerate in RB - then save the mgu file as midi and import that into RB. (In RB, a midi import is technically an "open" of a .mid file - same dialog as for opening a BB file.)

Good luck, Ron

Ahhh... the + sign did the trick!

I never attempted that because I figured once it's in, it's done. But now I think it's probably because it *re-generates* the MIDI drums from the style when it's in RB.

To answer your question about "importing" - yes, I mean "opening" a BB file *g*. I thinks that's one of the great features of this setup. I used to export the BB files as a stereo wav and be stuck with that as bed tracks on my outboard DAW. Now I can tweak individual tracks - which is fantastic.

Thank you, sir! You've salvaged an otherwise miserable day.

Something else to consider, Ray. I've stopped worrying about importing Biab tracks because you can easily create them from scratch in RB. Once you've opened your Biab song, the chord grid is already there. Simply right click on any track below the Biab ones, select "midi" and pick an instrument, in this case drums and there's your new drum track. This thing about the missing midi drum track used to bug the crap out of me too until I learned to bypass it this way. You can change the style and create as many different midi drum tracks as you want. Changing the style only affects the one highlighted track. Same for all the instruments so that means your original Biab song that was created using one style for everything really becomes just a template for the chords. After that, you can right click one at a time 40 tracks if you want and create all different instrument tracks using all different styles using combinations of RT's and midi.
You want to get creative with your song? This is the real power of Real Band.

Thanks for the tip, Bob. I am discovering new things every day, by trial & error, and by reading the forums.

Multiple drum tracks is a great idea (and easy with RB). Especially since I just learned the basics of creating my own grooves using the drum grid editor. Now I can add counter-rhythms and fills that I want. This is great stuff - thanks y'all...
