Hi, I just got a bunch of XG MIDI files and I'm trying to get them to play in RealBand so I can fine tune them.

Initially I'm trying to use my Keytron SD-4 HW synth module.

RB is playing GM files just fine but the XG files appear to play but no sound from the SD-4. Now you may say that the XG files are using some wierd CC(s) that is causing the problem. But they also don't play with the Coyote software synth.

The XG files DO play with Windoze Media Player using the SD-4 AND they also play fine with Reaper. Just not in RB.

I've tried RB 2014 on Win 8.1 and RB 2013 on Win 7. Same issue.

I've tried Disable Special Controllers in MIDI Out preferences but that didn't make any difference. Looking at the MIDI Monitor I'm not spotting anything that leaps out at me.

For good measure I've also tried killing the SysEx messages that are being sent, but that doesn't make and difference either.

I tried a search here for Playing XG MIDI files but that didn't turn up anything. I'm sure this has come up before so if there is a thread somewhere that I haven't found just point me in the right direction.

Thanks,
Burt

They may indeed have an XG message at the beginning.
MIDI Monitor is cool, but I'd highlight the beginning of the MIDI tracks and use Event Editor to look at what is being sent instead. Better view of the data.

Also XG does use a different numbering system, so the Ketron may be trying to use a patch it isn't set up for (not likely though).

In the same session, a GM file works, then an XG file doesn't, right?
Where are the XG files from?
Can you post or email one for someone else to look at?
The fact that they play in Media Player confuses me as RB uses system drivers ..
are you sure the driver doesn't change when you load the XG file?
If Media Player can send it to the SD4 then RB should also.
This is fixable .. just a setting somewhere.

I do not work here, but the benefits are still awesome

Yes, I start RB and I can play the GM files file. Then I can try the XG file and no output. Go back to the GM file without restarting RB and the GM file plays fine.

Yes, Media Player AND Reaper are using the system driver and have the same USB interface to MIDI selected. That's the same driver and device that is selected when attempting to play the XG file in RB. So that is what is the puzzlement.

I had looked at the tracks with the Event List and didn't spot anything strange, and for one test I removed all controls except for volume from the soloed Bass track and still nothing.

And as mentioned I had removed the SysEx messages to test but that didn't make and difference. The first SysEx is a GM reset and the others are likely XG related. So I thought maybe removing them would fix it but that didn't do it.

The XGs are from MidiTracks.uk so I can't really upload them. I'll have to dissect them some more to see if I can spot the culprit. Since Mediaplayer and Reaper both play the XG files OK it has to be something that RB is interpreting in the file that I'm not seeing right now.

I tried the XG .mid file in the following message and it DOES play in my RB installation so that tells me that it is something in the XG files from MidiTracks.uk which at least narrows things down a bit.

Thanks,
Burt

Sounds like one of my questions may have helped narrow this down .. that and SolidRock's posted file.
Wish you luck narrowing down the culprit in these downloaded files.

OK, I've at least found a work around, but it is still strange.

I was playing around and I saved the MIDI under a new name from RB, then loaded the "new" MIDI in RB and it plays OK. But the original XG MIDI still doesn't.

And for grins I saved the MIDI from Reaper where the XG MIDI plays OK and that saved MIDI copy also plays fine in RB.

This is without making any direct changes, no SyEx messages removed, etc. Just saving and then loading the saved MIDI.

I'll still try to root cause it but at least I can work with the files now.

Thanks for all your assistance.

Yes I remember now doing the same thing with other midi files that would not play.
