Hello all,

This is my first post. I am a newbie to BiaB and RB having purchased the 2009 everything pak last week. I am however, fairly seasoned in DAW software having used Cakewalk's Sonar for quite some time. I feel certain that a lot of musician/songwriters want to do what I'm trying to do. I love the flexibility of having BiaB create fundamental backing tracks with some good sounding real tracks.

The idea is to key the entire song into BiaB, get the chords and structure arranged fairly close to the final version. Then import that into Sonar in multitrack format. I don't think I can do that directly so I first open the BiaB song in RB and then export audio tracks from RB to import into Sonar. This actually works quite well.

Now the problem. The real drum part in the song has an "a" and "b" section(part marker) but when I import that into RB, it just has the "b" section all the way through. Is there something else I should do?

thanks,

Tom

Welcome to the forum!
I would audition JUST the drum track in BIAB first and see if it actually changes between the a and b sections. If it does, and you still can't get it to come through to RealBand, let us know which Style you're using or which RealDrums. Perhaps someone here can help.

Good luck!

Welcome to the forum...........I'm with you as far as structuring in BIAB, but I use RB or PTPA for the most part, for my final finish work. I would however like to see us be able to export to a multitrack file, as in the multitrack wav files that are available for PTPA. IF all the tracks in RB are audio save them to a multitrack wav file, and not have to piece tracks together if you take it to another studio using say sonar etc.

Wow, thanks for the replies and the welcome. Actually the problem is a little understated as I thought it was something simple due to my inexperience, so I tried to simplify it.

The style I'm using is "=DUN_BGE - Nash Rock Bal w/el guit (65RT) which when I'm in BiaB has 4 different drum variations a,b,c,d. When I open the same song in RB, it only has 2 variations a and b and that is what it is playing. So the problem is really a difference in the variations available in BiaB versus RB. Can anyone help me with this discrepancy?

Now that I used both products a little more, I must say I am confused by when I should use BiaB and RB and even Power Tracks. Does anyone have a general strategy regarding these products or what the best way to set up an arrangement that finally makes its way into a DAW whether it's Power Tracks or Sonar, etc...?

thanks,

Tom

Welcome.

That style is a so-called "multistyle," which means it has another style embedded in it. The reason there are more than 2 drum variations in this case is because the embedded style (=DUNN2.sty) has a different RD defined than the parent does. However, RB does not recognize multistyles. It will recognize only the parent - hence only the "a" and "b" substyles.

Tip for workaround: Invoke the =DUNN2 style directly to control generation for the sections where you want its substyles (the original "c" & "d". Read up how to do that, if necessary.) One kicker: you won't find the =DUNN2 style in the stylepicker - at least not in BB. (PG seems to have decided that styles embedded in multistyles have no independent merit. Not sure how they "hide" them.) You gotta open it from disc, or copy it to your own custom style so it will show in the stylemaker. EDIT - Just remembered, you can add the style directly to the stylemaker; recompile and voila.

Hope this gets you started. Others will help with other issues. -Ron

Hi Tom, Welcome!

Not sure this would be suitable for everyone but the method I sometimes use is to get a very basic structure in BAIB and get it straight into RB and create my variations here, either by re-rendering certain parts and cutting and pasting others. I sometimes continue in RB to the bitter end or export the WAV files and stick em in Cubase depending on needs. This is a great package though, you won't be dissapointed!

Kind Regards,

Dave.

Ron,

Thanks for the reply and the information. That must be exactly what's going on; I'll have to educate myself on styles and multistyles to understand benefits and limitations. Hopefully I can learn enough to contribute to this forum.

Dave, thanks for the reply as well. So far, I'm pleasantly surprised by the capability of the PG Music applications.

And remember, you can look at the style information in BIAB, make note of which RD's are used, and then even regenerate them at the appropriate points in RealBand.

Well, I'm still not sure how to sort this all out just yet, but I did find a quick solution. In BiaB, I can right-click the drum track at the top and select the "Save RealDrums as Wav File", then import that straight into Sonar to replace the previous RD track out of RB that only had the two variations. So, to summarize what I did for the current song I'm working on:

1. Entered the chords into BiaB and got the arrangement very close to complete with the right instrumentation.
2. Opened the same song in RB and exported audio tracks to a folder.
3. Imported all those audio tracks into Sonar.
4. Went back into BiaB and exported the RD track only (the one with 4 variations).
5. Imported that into Sonar to replace the first imported drum track.

It seems to be the long way around but it worked and hopefully I figure out styles and RD so I don't have to do this every time.
I would not have had to do steps 4 and 5 if the RD track came into RB the way it was in BiaB but I'm just trying to get something to work now and figure out the details for the next tune.

Do people post songs here?

What i do if i am not going to finish the song in RB, is to build the song in BiaB, then export all the Rt and Rd tracks as wave files and then save the rest as a midi file and open that in Sonar, and import the individual wave as well. This works great for me.

One thing you can do is to try processing the song inside RB, it will use many of the same plugins as Sonar, since both were originally DX based, they can share quite nicely
