Multi-millionaire #1 copies the song of multimillionaire #2 and a settlement is awarded and a large amount of cash may or may not be transferred between the accounts of said multimillionaires.
Meanwhile my Spotify account paid me a penny last month!

As far as PGM is concerned anything you create with Biab is yours but if it infringes on a copyright then you could get hit. Very unlikely unless your song zooms to the top and the big people take notice. Otherwise you're just one of the gazillions of wannabe's who might get a few hundred hits here or there online and nobody cares.

Same for Norton Music styles. My styles are a tool, and you can use any of my styles that you legally own without ever paying royalties to me for what you create with them. Now if you use my styles to infringe on the copyright of someone else, you accept full responsibility.

Bob I actually like the simplicity that goes with bein' a nobody. When you read about what happens to lottery winners, and how convoluted their lives get once it becomes commonly known that they have money... what a mess! All I want out of life is ENOUGH. I don't crave luxury or fame at all... I crave peace of mind, freedom to pursue my interests without interference, enough food, and enough income to pay the bills that accompany a very frugal lifestyle. To me, that is paradise.

Sure it's easy to say and I agree that nobody's like all of us on here don't have to care but it's bad for music. And after God and family music is what I've always loved most my whole life - regardless of fame and fortune. I love music from almost all genres. Old and new. So I care when something bizarre like this happens. Because even if I don't like a hit I hear, I respect everything it took to get there for that songwriter/artist/producer to have that hit and make those millions of dollars.
And if this stands, who's to say that next the song fingerprinting technology already in use won't become more advanced and spread way beyond Youtube. All music sites on the internet could start targeting the nobody's making music for fun too just because they used a bass chord pattern, drum groove or have a similar cowbell or something. This could be a future hassle for everybody - all nobody's having fun included.

You make good points and certainly as technology gets better there is a small chance they might come after us nobodies but I just don't see that happening and I don't see this whole thing as much of anything new. George Harrison paid for copying (whether he actually did it or not) My Sweet Lord over 40 years ago and the music industry survived/thrived. Plenty of other cases where someone pinched a song and got caught. As I said, I don't care a lot about these high profile cases and doubt it will ever impact those of us who do not represent any sort of significant revenue opportunity!

We can certainly agree to disagree. In George Harrison's case at least you can hear some of the same melody from He's So Fine.
This will probably get overturned on appeal or eventually settle. One thing about making the big bucks off one song, they can defend themselves and drag it out for years.
I have some thoughts on technology but I'll save those for another discussion with songwriters another day.

Chord changes cannot be copywritten so the idea that someone could own the I IV V chord progression is out. There are tons of songs based on those changes but every one of them does have a discrete melody and instrumental hooks like the guitar lick in Satisfaction for example.
Now fast forward to the last 20 years or so. Everybody over 50 has been complaining about how much the majority of modern music is all rhythm feel with minimal melody and few chord changes. How many times have we all said that it all sounds the same or close to it? That a trained monkey could come up with some of these so called songs? One bass groove droning over a loud annoying drum beat with even more annoying kindergarden level "lyrics". I have often thought that now if someone thinks someone else stole their song, how could they argue it? The only thing to argue about is the overall feel based on the rhythm tracks.
This case obviously went that way. I'm thinking (hoping?) that this will push songwriters back to the old days when song structure and melody really mattered.

My mother told me all my music sounded the same to her.
I suppose if I was steeped into pop music today, it wouldn't sound so 'same-ish' as it does. I'd hear the differences between songs. I just don't care to because to me most of it is pretty boring, and when I hear a heavily auto-tuned vocal, it just turns me off.
But like any generation, there are some good songs and good performances being released. I remember a lot of crap that we listened to when I was young. I think it's "Sturgeon's law -- 90% of everything is crap."
Copying a rhythm and bass line IMHO shouldn't constitute plagiarism, but I wasn't on the jury.
We do "Blurred Lines" because the women like it and want to dance to it. I guess they never listened to the words, especially the rap part, because it's very misogynistic. We change a few and omit the rap. If I were female, I wouldn't support it, but then there is a lot I don't understand about females. I suppose that works both ways too.
Here is another observation of mine, they could have copied "Got To Give It Up" note for note, melody, bass line, accompaniment and all, changed the words to make it a parody, and it would have been free and "Fair Use".
As far as I'm concerned, since "Blurred Lines" in no way infringed on the profitability of "Got To Give It Up", nothing tangible was actually stolen, and the lawsuit should have never been filed.
But I don't make the laws. And this might make it a bit harder for some to follow the laws.
