I received an email recently asking if I would be interested in being part of a documentary currently being filmed. We discussed various aspects of this via email, and phone, and they turned up at my house on Thursday and filmed me, on and off, for 6 hours!!! The initial reason for their interest was my appearance on tv a few years ago, and my unending quest for answers for the enforced loss of my career 16 years ago as a Dentist meaning now that I am now a NHS Whistleblower due to my discovery of "alleged" corruption in NHS Wales. The producer said he had listened to 2 sexy for me and would like to use that song as part of the background music bed. He said this song was brilliant and it gave him the idea to contact me. They had listened to my other songs on the drive to Wales and thought I was an "undiscovered" talent .I said I knew that LOL and oh how we laughed They wanted me to do an acoustic version of 2 sexy on my 12 string but decided against that on hearing it as it did not, unsurprisingly, sound the same. Oh well It was very hard not to do a little dance shouting YEH but I somehow managed to stay cool talking about my rights as the composer/performer etc. They then listened to some of my songs currently in production and I was asked if I would be able to write background music for their other films, future and currently in production. WOW! I pinched myself and yes it wasn't a dream. BIAB was discussed and they thought the programme was outstanding. Thank you Dr Gannon.Everything musical is still in the discussion stage at the moment and I post this to ask if any other forumites have any advice they could share with me. Alyn ps I would also like to know if any Brits know of a tenacious UK legal firm that would not be scared of fighting NHS Wales. (I know of many that go "woah no way") My proof is well documented.I LOVE BIAB

Sounds amazing, Alyn, but it's a perfect example of opportunity meeting preparedness. I hope this goes really well for you on all fronts.

Hi Alyn.
Sounds great and congratulations, but as for advice...
1) Don't pay them any money, no matter what it's for.
2) Find out how long they've been operating and how many programmes they've actually had accepted. Broadcasters only work with recognised production companies and they're easy to track down. If they've no history, be careful.
3) Look carefully at the content of past programmes. People have been tricked into appearing in programmes where they've then been treated in a way they didn't like or expect.
4) Don't sign any exclusivity agreements. If they don't broadcast, it stops you going elsewhere and effectively shuts down your campaign. This is one of the establishment's favourite tricks.
Sorry if all the advice seems to be negative, but it's best to stay safe. If it all checks out OK, then go for it!
ROG.

ROG. Yup, yup, yup, and yup. Especially numbers 1 and 4. Regarding #4... read it carefully so that you're not agreeing to pay any costs down the road. If you're not sure about the wording in the contract/agreement, ask them to wait a few days while your legal council reviews it for you.... don't take their word or explanation, do have someone on YOUR team who understands the ins and outs of contracts in your country review and and let them give you accurate advice.

Great news Alyn!
The best advice you have received thus far has been from Herb, "few days while your legal council reviews it for you". Not the wait part but the legal council part. Always have legal council when doing business.
PS - don't forget us when you get rich and more famous!
Back in my day the only time we started panic buying was when the bartender shouted "last call"!

Ryszard, thanks for that ROGThat is exactly the advice I wanted. The mind makes all the positive points but I need to know the negatives. Thank you so much. re No:3 that's what happened when I appeared on TV!! And they can go and do rude things to themselves if they want exclusivity agreements with ANY of my music.... 90dbThere's always one LOL Prior to consideration for your short term LOAN at competitive rates of 976% APR you will have to conclusively prove, in hard copy with photos, and with no shadow of doubt that you will not waste any of the aforementioned funds on healthy and sensible pursuits and that you will only spend it on wine, wimmin and song! The above is only given as advice and does not constitute a contract. Herb Your advice is excellent and I will pay attention to what you wrote as it confirms what I thought. Thank you so much. Alyn

Joanne,You and your music deserve this recognition. I say the same for you and your music. Thanks for the support. Mario I will pay good attention to the advice of ROG and Herb and will be in contact early next week with a good Lawyer who knows the music business and/or legal contracts. Of course I won't forget you Dave, *looks at relevant post* oops sorry, i meant Mario. 90db *folds arms and looks disapprovingly over top of glasses* Dave, sorry Mario, has a good point signed by Alyn's new secretarial team

Alyn,
I don't want a loan... I'll be happy if I try to contact you after you're famous, and you take the call (instead of having it intercepted by someone in your entourage)
Good luck in this! I hope all of the good possibilities materialize, and none of the bad ones do.

Alyn
I've been in the music biz long enough to have seen a number of really good people taken advantage of. I've also gotten the typical "come on" letters from shark scammer companies.... and have trashed them all. I think the worst one was a guy posing as a legit publisher.... signed a number of my songs with the Songwriter's Guild song contract....which was, and perhaps still is the Gold Standard for songwriting contracts. Nothing was happening with the songs.... which is also typical.... then about a year into the contract's 2 year term, I get a letter stating that he'd like to develop and promote me as a star singer/writer/artist.... and he had several packages that I could avail myself of..... the cheapest one was mid 5 digits..... the top one was a sweet, cool quarter mill...... needless to say, when the initial time was up on the contracts I sent my reclamation letter taking back control of the copyright. One songwriter I worked with years ago had a closet filled with cases of unsold and useless albums that he had from one of the shark companies he was scammed by. I'm not saying of course that this is a scam. It might be 100% legit and a great opportunity for you to advance your street cred. As a documentary, it might not make you rich but it will certainly pad your resume nicely. Proceed with caution and eyes open. I've known a few folks who got songs into documentary's and the money is slim to none.... but it gets them some recognition. I wish all the best.

Oh Alyn! What fantastic news!!!
Just please use a real entertainment attorney for legal council and not your brother in law or cousin or friend of a friend who took a course in it back in law school.
Entertainment lawyers know all the current ins and outs that a regular attorney won't know. You'll be really glad you did. When you have a song like 2 Sexy For Me that flashes hit like a neon sign I'd be surprised if this is not just the beginning for that song's journey. So please get an entertainment lawyer.
I think you'll be great addition for any production team.
This is so exciting!!!
Josie

Josie,Thanks for your advice re lawyers. I wouldn't "go local" for slightly different reasons. I shall definitely take your advice. yeh it is very exiting BUT as I am a pessimist by nature I have to pretend, to myself, not to be too exited CharlieI couldn't fire the band, we have been together too long. Thanks for your best wishes Alyn
