I thought I might share my first attempt at creating a complete song using Real Band. The bass, drums, guitar & trumpet are all real tracks; I played the piano part live on my Yamaha Clavinova. One chorus too many perhaps, but who cares when you're enjoying yourself?

I'm absolutely knocked out by this brilliant program - it's so musical & inspiring to use. Gonna give me hours of fun!

Andrew, this is a fantastic first attempt.

Great arrangement and production.

OK, a random thought;

Really good, man. One comment and a suggestion. The Real Track guitar comping is playing the same style as you are behind the head and trumpet solo and you're stepping on each other. I run into the same problem when I do gigs with a guitarist. One of us has to simplify our comps. Try using one of the midi styles with the Freddy Green comping behind those parts. My Forte synth sounds good enough for that because it's simple background chords. Also bring up the drums in the mix, when you listen to a recording of a jazz trio, the drums are right there in your face.
Post more stuff, I like it.

Nice! I can see what Bob means though I don't think it is really disturbing all the way, just here and there, BUT I listen with the headphones on right now, so that might not be a great reference since the they are pretty clear panned and therefore on the headphone they do not interfere with eachother a lot. Maybe you had a headphone on while recording? Well it might also be solved by EQ-ing the guitar some at the low end. Cutting there might make the guitar more transparant and lighter in the mix and so a bit less interfering. You could also trade piano with guitar once in a while or mute the guitar on the really "hard to hear the instrument" parts. Anyway, maybe a little long yes, but nevertheless a very nice track!

I'll be back...

Thanks abaudio. I EQ'd the guitar to take off some of the high end, as it sounded a bit twangy at first. In doing this perhaps I added to the other problem! I've got a lot to learn about all this (as well as playing the music), but it's great fun & wonderful to receive helpful suggestions.

Many thanks

Andrew,
I just got to this thread because of another thread about Box.net. I want to say your version of the song is very enjoyable, and you've just got to love that Clavinova piano sound.

Warmest regards,

Gary
