A song to honor the life of Paul Walker and the stunt men and women who have lost their lives creating the movies we love. I wrote this song in the late 80's when a woman lost her life doing stunts for a movie - I was living in LA at the time had a good friend who lived just off Hollywood Boulevard, so I came up with this song. I think it would be a great song for a female vocalist to record. http://www.soundclick.com/player/single_player.cfm?songid=13093409&q=hi&newref=1Drums. bass, and piano were BIAB midi with either a Roland SC33 or Proteus1 plus orchestral -using the early BIAB for MAC - I played guitar and sang and not sure if I or BIAB did the choral parts. Restored from stereo cassette tape using Digital performer - reverb, compression, egualizer, limiter for tape machine noise. Mastered with compression and Spatial Maximizer. Hollywood Boulevard chorus Out on Hollywood Boulevard The stars in concrete couldn't compete with your eyes Out on Hollywood Boulevard The tinsel won't keep, it's such a cheat That street has a cold, cold heart v.1 You did the stunts for the Hollywood stars Flying so brave and so free My life was steady and I guess that's why You needed someone like me prechorus Oh' I could never really tell was it truth or fantasy You said you wanted to settle down and raise up a family repeat chorus v.2 This star belongs to Marilyn Monroe We stood right here when we kissed You said that after your next picture show We'd make up for what we had missed prechorus But all I got was telephone call, they said that things had gone wrong Now every night I walk the Boulevard, oh, baby, I'm so lost. repeat chorus and tag written by Pete Gallatin

Good write and good story line. Could use some work in places. I would increase the tempo a little. I guess that's what this forum is all about improving on what we do. Rob

Nice song Pete, I just think the lyrics could come up a bit.

Interesting song! The melody is kind of hypnotic. Really interesting chord changes. Enjoyed it! If you don't know it, you should check out the song by The Kinks about the stars on Hollywood Blvd (the title escapes me). Take care. Greg

Rob Thanks Rob - yes, the production was the best I could do 25 yrs ago - with the BIAB of today it could be a lot cleaner. The tempo is around 80 bpm which is about right for a ballad - but I see another poster agrees with you - I could just speed up the audio playback to speed up this version. Best --- Pete

Thanks Trevor, This song is a digital restoration from a stereo cassette track I produced about 25 yrs. ago - I did everything I could to bring out the vocal with eq and other tools but had to cut back some because I was getting pops and clicks in odd places. These old tapes interest me because at the time I was just writing to please myself - you can hear a professional representation of my work at www.broadjam.com/PETE --Best --Pete

Rob and Anne-Marie One of my songwriter friends called me "The King of Heartache", I was happy to be called the king of anything. Yeah, the years are going by faster for me. Maybe a hip hop version of "Hollywood Boulevard" ha ha. thanks to you.

Impressive for a restored cassette. I've tried that and it is no small feat.
Enjoyed it.

Yeah, I agree with you on the hypnotic part, going through my old cassettes, this song always seems to haunt me. I remember when I first put the chords into BIAB it was magic how it came out. Thanks for the tip on the Kinks song, I'll check it out. I must have played the riff from "You Really Got Me" a million times when I was learning guitar. I even thought of ripping my speaker cone because that's how Ray said he got his tone.

J&B The plugin effects on Digital Performer are super for this. I started with ProVerb which is a convolution reverb which opened up the sound - even set at zero. It also turns a mono to a stereo track if you want so you can pan the sound more. Compression really helped separate the bass and drums. The most exciting new plug-in is the Spacial Maximizer here's what DP says- Spatial Maximizer takes a stereo signal and gives you independent control over center (mid) content versus the panned (side) content. Applications go way beyond prepping final mixes for vinyl mastering with side band high-pass filtering and mid band bass enhancement. Each band can be independently processed with a full-featured, five-band dynamic equalizer, allowing you to mould and shape any stereo track or mix. Enjoy dramatic levels of control over the stereo spectrum and spatial impression of a complete stereo mix, or individual tracks within a stereo mix. I just fiddle with the settings for 20 minutes - then realize I've gone too far and cut back 40 or 50% and voila!- song's ready. Actually it's a wonderful tool that I'm understanding more and better how to use. That's one of the benefits of my cassette restoration binge. I learn more by doing projects than trying to read a 992 page manual. Thanks J&B (why do I want a drink now) PS - sorry for the corny joke. I'm compulsive.

Hi Pete, Nice piece of songwriting! If ever you are feeling adventurous and want to discover what BIAB in its latest incarnation could do with this song, now that you have the audio file, you could run it through the ACW (audio chord wizard), get the chord progression and re-imagine the arrangement. I reckon it would be well worth the effort. I'm heading back for another listen, now. All the best, Noel

All the best, Noel Thanks Noel, I had never used the ACW before and that was fun - that's a useful tool to have available and will save a lot of time and labor. The read out of the chords was off here and there but easy to correct. One problem was (I think)the speed of the cassette playback was between keys. I thought I had the original BIAB file but couldn't find it so your post was very timely. --- Pete
