I've already checked with support on this feature, and they confirmed they don't have this feature.

What I'm wanting to do is find a website where I can plugin the NAME of the chord (NOT THE NOTES), and it will tell me what the notes are. Now, don't laugh. I'm pretty handy with theory, but some of these Metheny-ish jazz chords are just beyond me. I can take a stab at them, but I want to be sure. I'm amazed that BIAB2013 features a BIG PHATT KEYBOARD, AND a feature to play ANY isolated chord by itself, but hasn't thought about marrying these 2 features. HELLO? THAT's where we ought to be laughing.

KC,

Please give some examples of what kind of chords you mean. That will help us all with understanding what you are after. Maybe, once we fully understand the problem, one of us will be able to offer a solution. There are some incredibly talented and knowledgeable users on these forums.

Regards,
Noel

Both the piano and guitar chord dictionaries offered by PG Music can display the notes that make up a chord or conversely you can choose a group of notes and see the name of that chord!

There is a number of chord naming programs and web sites. Here are a few:

http://www.sengpielaudio.com/ChordNameFinder.htm

http://www.gootar.com/piano/index.php

http://chordfind.com/

Google/bing are your friends.

One thing to remember and I'm sure that you already know this but just in case, most all jazz guitarist do not play a full chord, only selected notes from a chord. Thus three or notes played on a guitar can be notes from several chord names. Hopefully you have the entire chord name to work with and not just the notes played by the guitarist.

PG Music sells a Chord Dictionary for $19. I have it and it's great, shows folk, pop, jazz (for the same chord) and about 10 voicing s across the fretboard.

It's here http://www.pgmusic.com/guitarchorddictionary.htm

Anyways it inexpensive and well worth the money.

Thanks Noel,

Again, I can handle most "normal" chords. The ones I'm having issue with is like Em7b5/D, D69, A2/C#, A7sus, D2/F#. So, let me take a stab at them here, and just check me. However, I'd still like a resource, or tip on how I could just do this task with a straight-fwd method.

Em7b5/D = D-E-G-Bb
D69 = D-E-F#-B?
A2/C# = C#-E-A
A7sus = ?
D2/F# = F#-A-D

Not bad for most drummers.

If you have a note in the chord that's a seventh or above, generally (with plenty of exceptions) that note will be voiced on top.

One way:

D69 = D-E-F#-B? D-F#-A-B-E

Using your inversions:

A2/C# = C#-E-A C#-E-A-B
A7sus = ? A-D-E-G
D2/F# = F#-A-D F#-A-D-E

All the tools mentioned above.

But if you are not a guitar player, I am, I suggest a PIANO dictionary.

just my opinion, but I think it is visually faster to recognize root, 3rd, 5th ,.., 9th above root as opposed to 2nd, which inversion, etc. (again just my opinion if you are not a guitar player)

and BTW, if you go back through any/all PG disks, bonus paks, free paks you bought over the years you may ALREADY have the Piano (or the Guitar) Dictionary programs. In 2014 the PG Piano Dictionary program was part of an add-on 25 pak; in 2012 the Guitar Dictionary program was part of the 10 pak add-on, etc.

Thanks Matt,

So, I wasn't far off, and I was aware of the spaced out voicing you suggested, but I have small hands, and sometimes I just prefer the close voicing. I guess I could edit that in the MIDI though. LOVE that MIDI. With the A2, and D2 I wasn't sure if that was referring to the 2nd step (as you've concluded), or 2nd inversion; but I guess the note on the right side of the / would determine the inversion? I should'a had the A7sus, but I hesitated.

You can also do what jazzmandan suggested, use a simple piano style with held chords, that will be displayed on the piano roll or keyboard.

I think this way is easiest:

Right click on an empty midi track
Select Custom Midi Style for this track
Choose from Presets..
Type "Held" in the filter String
Select a Held one like "Piano Acoustic Simple Held Chords.."
Open Big Piano Set it to the Midi Piano Track.
