Thanks, but I'm not clicking on a link that starts with 'torrentfreak' unless I know a lot more about it.

It appears to be a safe sight with an unfortunate name!
I tried to find anything on the Internet that disputes this but I could not.
A very sad and maddening read.
Doc-take it easy John this is just a sharp scalpel. It will not cut deep so don't worry. Me-I'm not John Doc-I know, I am!

The site probably only has an unfortunate name. It does not appear anything like the typical "torrent". It has articles and articles and essays...
Avira says, it is safe. I clicked on it and read the article but for me there is nothing new.

This is the author of that article: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rick_FalkvingeFounder of the Pirate Party? What do you guys think of that? This thread topic needs a little more unbiased research I think. Bob

I though copyright laws prohibited the copying and commercial use of material. Surely it is not illegal to alter a code provided you do not sell it. Anyway most farmers today are probably pushed to know all the operating tricks on todays technology, let alone to start to fix things. Just think about all the software you use in recording. It's hard enough getting it all to work in the first place, and if it broke I wouldn't have a clue how to fix it. Anyway, software doesn't breakdown, if it stops working, then it has reached a situation for which it was not programmed for, or it is buggy, which means it didn't work properly in the first place. Which doesn't change things though, software manufacturers have you by the short and curlys

I don't know that it's as bad as all that necessarily. I have a friend who does all kinds of rebuilds, he rarely uses the original engine management computer, let alone the associated software.
Of course, then you have companies like BMW whose systems "phone home" when being serviced and if there are "unauthorised" changes they simply restore to factory settings automatically...

I didn't need to click the link because I saw this in a story somewhere else a few days back.
Car and tractor manufacturers apparently, are keeping the software that runs the computer in the car or tractor proprietary so folks can not hack it easily or alter it. This is leaving many folks with inoperable equipment in some cases.
You own the tractor or car, but not the software that runs it. Makes you nostalgic for points and condensers again..... yes?

You can find my music at: www.herbhartley.comAdd nothing that adds nothing to the music. You can make excuses or you can make progress but not both. The magic you are looking for is in the work you are avoiding.

Makes you nostalgic for points and condensers again..... yes? True but the bigger picture is emissions and fuel economy. The only way to have a smelly, dirty engine that runs on fossil fuels produce a clean exhaust plus get better and better economy is through sophisticated computers controlling an electronic ignition, electronic fuel injection, electronic variable valves and all that. Companies spend millions developing these computer programs and should be protected. I know you're old enough to remember this. It's 1970 on a hot summers day with no wind and you're stuck in a traffic jam. The exhaust fumes were enough to make the Hulk pass out but hey, you had points and a condenser... Bob

Hmmm, nuh, not really, but it IS a hell of a lot *cheaper and considerably easier to maintain - not all mechanics are created equal... Not to mention the incredible variability in quality of what passes for fuel these days Of course, something that never seems to come up with the car manufacturers is water injection - water injection has considerable benefits when used correctly. (voice of experience, not theory) *'tis a shame the savings aren't passed on to the consumer though. Or perhaps they are but indirectly in that we're getting more in the rest of the car for our buck than we would have... I need to think about that.

Manufacturers fear the real possibility their electronics maybe compromised and abused.
Fairly recently some hackers demonstrated how easy it is to high jack the data and control system of a car through the OBII port located inside the passenger compartment of every US car since 1996. That is one of the real fears manufacturers face as we progress toward the self driving car. ON STAR and similar services can remotely disable any vehicle equipped to communicate with them. Even if you don't use the service, the capability is present.
