People come and go, politics, war, we know the issues. I am wondering if anyone knows of a world famous band that has had every single person replaced but is still famous. I need this for philosophy not music. Perhaps you might of heard of the Ship of Theseus?

Anyone?

with the recent resurgence in bands from our youth coming back for another world tour I have been very careful to check them out on Wikipedia to see if any of the folks who sang/played on the songs I love are even gonna be there! for example, if The Jimi Hendrix Experience starts touring again I may take a pass!!

a few years ago my wife and I went to see The Grass Roots. We were excited to see them as Rob Grill was again/still leading the band. But the night of the show, right before showtime, the venue manager came on stage and announced that unfortunately Rob Grill would not appear and another "really great singer" would be taking his place. he offered a refund to anyone who wanted to leave before the show started but I don't think anyone did as we were already seated and ready for a show! a short time later Rob passed away.

My drummer is the drummer now for Blood Sweat and Tears. Two others, horn players who played on my CD, are also there - younger guys. I don't think many if any of the original band are still there. And Lou Soloff just died recently.

Matt -

Somehow I missed Lew Soloff passing. I loved listening to him play with BS&T and I've got a few other non-BS&T albums he played on.

Sad to see him go.

Little River Band - although if you ask some of the original members the current band is a tribute band, NOT LRB even though one of the current members is the legal owner of the name - there's lot's of angst about this one...

Other than the aforementioned (LRB and BS&T):

The Hollies
Renaissance
The Oak Ridge Boys
Newsboys
The Four Freshmen
Molly Hatchet
Blackfoot

I have albums by all of the above (including Little River Band and Blood, Sweat, And Tears)

A little further afield, but there are some big bands from the swing era still around, using the same name but with all new personnel. Count Basie Orchestra and Sammy Kaye Orchestra come to mind.

If you look up many of the long standing UK brass bands of the more well known names, those bands have existed long enough for it to be impossible for them to still have original founding members.

Hi John,
I think you'll find that there are still two original members of The Hollies - Tony Hicks & Bobby Elliott.
When we saw them recently they said that they were original members.
Pehaps not ORIGINAL original members, but certainly there from the early days before they made it big.

If you count vocal groups, it was the norm for the record companies to own the name of the group and constantly change the personnel, even when they had recordings on Billboard - Coasters, Platters, Cookies, and so on.

At one time they had 4 different groups touring the country at the same time called The Platters, and I don't think Tony Williams was in any of them.

We opened for The Association twice, once when Cherish was #1 on Billboard, and once a couple of years later. Nobody was the same.

Back in the 70s I went to see The Ink Spots, a group from my parent's generation. The lead singer announced that his uncle was in the original group.

Jay and The Americans hired David Blatt to replace the original lead singer Jay Traynor and David then changed his name to Jay Black so the group wouldn't have to change the name. Eventually the replacement David/Jay toured with new musicians (no originals) as "Jay And The Americans".

Of course Blood Sweat and Tears changed personnel through the years, even the lead singer from the original Al Kooper to David Clayton Thomas.

Smokey Robinson once joked that if they ever held a Miracles reunion, they would have to rent a football stadium.

I suppose it depends on how much people know about the individual group members.

At least those bands and groups without any orignal members are not as rare as those with all the original members still in that group after several years have passed since the group started.

Tony Hicks replaced Vic Steele on electric guitar and Bobby Elliott replaced Don Rathbone on drums. The group was really called The Deltas, but started calling themselves The Hollies in December 1962. Tony Hicks and Bobby Elliott showed up in May 1963. That's when they started recording, but the band performed live as the Hollies prior to that.

At least that is my understanding.

I've seen Newsboys in concert several times and have many of their CD's. "Breakfast" popped up on my eclectic playlist just yesterday, in fact.

Hi John,
I stand corrected. I guess the "beginning" of many bands is a grey area; is the "beginning" when the band first got together in the garage, or when they did their first recording?

If you asked anybody who was in The Beatles 99.99% would not say Stu Sutcliffe or Pete Best.
P.S. I'm not being argumentative John, just thinking out loud.

I don't think there's any original members of Hermans Hermits still touring, although the band still is.
