It's not simply a case of "turn it up" but more a case of if you're using it (a shaker) you should be able to hear it and identify what it is. https://www.youtube.com/watch?t=669&v=pJidEUZnGN8 Listen to this starting around 10 minutes.... there's all sorts or percussion in there that is delicate but clearly audible. This was referenced in another forum site as a good example of clarity in a mix and capturing the quality of the various instruments. To me, I'm not a fan of the music style, but they are spot on with the comment about a superbly clear mix.

You can find my music at: www.herbhartley.comAdd nothing that adds nothing to the music. You can make excuses or you can make progress but not both. The magic you are looking for is in the work you are avoiding.

Occasionally, as you mix, listen at VERY low volume... like somebody walked into the room and needs your attention, so you turn the music down to be under the conversation. That will generally tell you if you need more cowbell...I mean drums... they should be pretty dominant at that level...drums and vocal and a little guitar (rhythm)

I do understand that, I was more making a joke about how I've heard a few times to turn the drums up in the mix. I NEVER thought I would have THAT problem! As far as the example, yes you can clearly hear all of the parts. That is impressive. They all seem to have their space they occupy. I would love to know how to do that. Understanding that is done is one thing, "how" is another thing! A HUGE one!

It is a simple tip, that goes a LONG way! Thank you!

Agreed. That "shhh..." sounds is the next key.
I thank you much for your help!
With MIDI you can usually figure out a way to send each drum to desired 'Port' and assign a given sound. 'How' would depend on the software. For some this is the next layer of complexity and 'Aha' at the same time. With MIDI you can have every drum but one (or 2 or 3..) assigned to a given sample set and those other drums assigned to another. Otherwise you would be relying on the sample set creator to create the 'perfect drum set' for your need. Learn this feature and you'll have much more control. It'll take effort, but will be rewarded with the results. Many times I have used a high hat sound from a sample set that is different than the rest of the basic drums .. even more often with the snare (or ride).
I do not work here, but the benefits are still awesome Make your sound your own!

This I knew, but (for me) that gets really crazy, really quick! I think (for now) I am going to stick to the song writing side, and dabble in this...if that's possible! Is it the control freak in me that would want this though? ha! Anyway, I did figure a few things out. One of them is I do feel I should at least separate the midi tracks from the aspect of changing the velocities of the notes. For some reason, most of them recorded at 127. I don' hit that hard consistently, so I'm guessing it's a setting. By splitting them I can mess with the velocities easier in piano roll. Latest attempt... More slush than Shhh...but getting there?

Check the sensitivity setting for whatever tool you're using to trigger the notes. The sensitivity setting is used to adjust the pad to how you strike or trigger them. Light touch can still play heavy metal! Some also have preset velocity curves.

If you do start playing with the velocities, there's a nice plugin from platinumears that lets you draw in a velocity curve before your drum sampler.
