SOOOO true! This applies to every person involved with the song. There are songs that call for "busy-ness". Most songs don't though.
The discipline in my opinion is stripping everything down to the essential. That is SO hard to do. It's about what the song needs, not what the ego needs. It doesn't matter if it's drum, guitar, flute, lyrics...it all applies.
I know with my own postings in drumming recently, I have some overplaying on purpose. That is because these are not songs, but testing the software, and sounds choices.
Thanks for the posting. It's great to hear things like this!

TEMPO TANTRUM: What a lead singer has when they can't stay in time.
I watched the video and was pleasantly surprised by the drummers stance.
I've always thought that a drummer should keep the beat and never draw attention to themselves. If someone listens to a song and thinks "that drummer is great!", then the drummer is probably doing it wrong.
Did anyone else think it odd how much more applause he got after "good drums?" It's almost like they got the point and missed it at the same time. Or just missed it?
I have a regular "gig" at a local beach, actually outside the surf club, where a bunch of us get together to play some jazz - we don't get paid, but there is a donation bucket for the surf club that goes out.
Until recently when he decided he'd had enough (not gettin' any younger you know) I had the privilege of playing with one of the finest drummers I've ever heard and who was part of this little group.
His tempo is rock solid, understands jazz.., understands DYNAMICS, communicates well; especially with the bass player, knows that less is more, doesn't over play, doesn't under play... everything you could want - I'm really sorry he's pulled out
--=-- My credo: If it's worth doing, it's worth overdoing - just ask my missus, she'll tell ya --=--
