I'm running RealBand 2014 on a Windows 8 machine, through an M-Audio Fast Track USB (the old model). I would like to monitor my recording so that I can hear the (otherwise near-silent) electric guitar. The audio preferences indicate I must use ASIO in order to monitor. I have three ASIO drivers: ASIO Multimedia (which has dreadful latency), MAudio USB ASIO (which has a sample rate (48) incompatible with the device (41.1), go figure), and ASIO4ALL (which refuses to connect, and provides silent output). ASIO4ALL shows output ports not connected.

The yellow-highlighted message suggest that my problem is that another audio program is running or a MIDI driver is acting as the audio output. No audio program is running THAT I KNOW OF. Three audio programs are pinned to my taskbar, but not running. I ran RB without a browser on the off-chance that YouTube or some player embedded somewhere could be the problem. As for MIDI outputs, I show two: MS MIDI Mapper (selected) and MS GS Wavetable Synth (warned about in the message). I deselected both to see what would happen, and it made no difference. I restored the MIDI mapper.

Does anyone have a solution or suggestion for this?

Thanks,
Joe

If you loaded the M-Audio drivers, then in Windows Control Panel (make sure you music software is closed first), you should be able to go into the M-Audio settings and set the sample rate (and other things) accordingly. I'd give that a try and then see if the M-Audio ASIO works for you. I have a FT Pro on my Win8.1 machine also that seems to work fine.

If the interface will run true ASIO you don't need ASIO4ALL and you should remove it completely from the machine.

Go to the M-Audio website and see if they have updated the drivers for that interface to work properly with Windows 8. Every time they come out with a new OS, the drivers you use MUST be updated as well or you can run into issues.

This very thing has caused me to have to buy new interfaces as the OS and drivers became incompatible with the newly released OS and the interface company wasn't interested in writing new drivers. You could, however, buy a new interface that was compatible..... after all, why write a new driver and provide it free when you can simply sell a totally new interface and pocket a profit?

You might be in that position.....

That statement is just too close for comfort... Been there, done that frown

A Quick Update--I'm not quite there yet.
Thanks to Guitarhacker, jford, and Video Track for your comments and helpful advice. Here's what I did: I downloaded and installed updated drivers for the interface, and RealBand saw the Fast Track ASIO. I selected it and I achieved monitoring during recording--a major goal of this exercise--but now nothing is being recorded. The track is empty when I finish. Everything in the settings seems ok. The audio settings on the lower right indicate the settings in Windows correctly (including the recording device). I feel like I'm getting close. Any thoughts?

When you say the track is empty, do you mean there is nothing on the track, or just a solid bar on the track?

Just for fun, why not try highlighting the whole track, right-clicking, and select Audio Effects, Gain Change, and select normalize. It is possible that the input levels were too low and so you don't see a wav form on the track. I've had this happen to me before.

If that's the case, then you'll need to adjust input levels.

Also, I don't know about your FastTrack, but on my FastTrack Pro, there is a knob to switch between monitoring what's coming through the FastTrack inputs and what's coming from the Computer to the FastTrack. Setting this knob too far in one direction can make it appear that nothing is recording, as well.

Just a thought.

Thanks for those suggestions. My FastTrack is an old model. It has a Mix dial allowing the ratio of input to output signal to be heard. I get indications of input on the VU meter. After tweaking this dial a bit I got a take in which I could hear the input and the output on playback. I don't remember what I did to achieve it, and now I can't replicate. In all cases but that one, the track output visually is a solid line with no waveform.

Did you Ru to normalize that waveform line?

With numerous suggestions and tips from jford, I arrived at a solution that enables low-latency input, monitoring and output to a mono track. The Fast Track ASIO driver worked properly with the old model Fast Track, I didn't use ASIO4ALL at all.

My old Fast Track model sends input signals to the right stereo channel, while RealBand defaults to the left. Changing that enabled mono track recording. This was huge for me.

What started out as an ASIO4ALL question, was solved by the use of the approved driver, and figuring out where to capture inputs. Thanks again to jford and to all that chimed in on this.

I learned a lot.
