Well - I took a little advice from everyone and here are the results.

Realized - I do not have the best conditions for recording - switched from a condenser mike to my shure 58 - seems to pick up less of the nasty sound where I record.

Went with a realdrums track. Tried to just balance things out a little better.

Let me know if I am headed in the right direction - I think it sounds better. And thanks again from everyone who left pointers.

Sounds good to me, I'd try punching up the drums a tad, but that's a personal thing.

Big difference in the new mix. It sounded good over here. I have a sm58 also I will be using as soon as I get the kinks out of my system. I like it.

Other than I'd like to hear the drums just a "weeee bit more" the difference to me at least, is day vs night. . . in a good way.

Nice Work,

Rich,
Real nice tune, VERY nice voice. I thought I heard a hum through the whole thing, though. I'm not sure. But, I enjoyed it.

I'll have to take a listen for the hum - I thought I dropped everything off down in the freq that would hum - but maybe not.

As far as the drums - I over did it the first time - and I am an old drummer who loves to hear the beat - in an effort to compensate I might have went a bit too far the other way.

Thanks for the comments.

Rich,
Whatever it is, it's there right before you start singing, and then again, at the end of the song. What it sounds like is maybe a stuck bass note? Which would mean a 'hum' to me. I'd take a look at whatever you were using for bass, and see if you can't isolate that track, and see if that's your cause of what I hear.

Gary

Gary,

I think you are probably right - I have had to go back on a couple of different projects lately and take out a "hum" which was actually tied to the bass line. I've notice it during some of my intros - but had not noticed in other areas.

Thanks

Sounds like a much better mix. The ugly steel drop out at 0:08 just kills me, though.

Hey Rich.........

No comparison.......this version is far a way better. The first note of the intro started as soon as I hit play, without any space at all, almost sounded like the firsts part of the first note was cut off.

Drums I thought were right on.

The hum: I think Gary is right about the bass.

It works.

You certainly learned something! Wow what an improvement!!! Really great!

Now this way, the vocals get what they deserve, a spot in the centre, and on top of the mix, making it even more clear how much warmth and soul it carries. You did a great job.

And as for the "hum" well actually I think it is also only in the intro. I think it could be a basspedal setting that you might have got activated for the intro. I tried that basspedal a view times and until now found it an ugly extra, that seems not to do what I wanted it to do, maybe it just doesn't suit my music. But well that is another story.

All in all I think you did a great job. On one way I would like to see the vocals a bit more tight with the rhythm, now it seems that you walk behind the beat quite often, coming in a bit late, on the other hand it makes the vocals also sound more ... hmmm... vulnerable, softened(?), I don't know how to express what I feel it as well adds to it.

The only thing, besides the "hum", that is still really not nice, is as Kemmrich allready mentioned , the sudden stop of the guitar (followed by a kind of misplaced single pianonote) at 0:07-0.08 seconds.

I'll be back...

Wow! What kind of preamp you using there? Pro sounding cut. Your voice is balanced perfectly. The drums are ok. I've heard pro recordins that didn't sound much better than this. You might compress the drums just a tad and that would probably do it. However, about ½ way through the song the drums come on strong. Now they're balanced good.

Needs some harmony. I can hear it in my head. But as is it's great. Good on ya Mate. Ya got a winner here.

Oh. One last thing. Give it some start room. It starts playing as soon as you push play. Needs at least 2 seconds of delay time there.

Kevin,

Maybe I keep listening to the wrong place for the drop - somewhere close to that time is the break between the intro and the verse.

I'll give it another listen

"Solo" the pedal steel and at between 0:07 and 0:08 -- there is an unnatural drop out. If you can't fix it , then I would cut the steel section from 0:06 to 0:08. You'll have to trust me on this one, it hurts the song. If I was a producer/ AR type guy, I'd probably end listening to the demo right there.

Toucher,

Yeah I am sure it is the bass making what sounds like a hum. I went back and looked - I did have maxxbass by waves on that track experimenting with the effect ( thought I had taken it off). That may be the culprit.

And you're right - need a couple of seconds before it starts.

Thanks for the pointers

Russell,

I have a very bare bones setup here. PreSonus TubePre going to Tascam usb interface. I've been thinking about upgrading the Tascam - got any thoughts on that ?

Thanks for the comments
