Can anyone tell me how to make an Aux Send so I can use overall compression. I have read that this will help me with my overall gain staging. I'm not getting the volume right after rendering to MP3.

For a complete description, in RB on the Menu Bar, select Help, select User Guide. The mixer is explained in detail in Chapter 11 beginning on page 162.

My understanding of gain staging is that it is used to set volume levels to provide head room for processing as you mix. Gain staging is done before any processing. Adding compression is processing and should be done after gain staging has been done.

Hi Hargisr.

If it's OVERALL compression which you want, go to the A1 group to the right of the mixer and click on the FX button. If you insert a compressor or limiter here it will operate on the whole mix and improve your level.

Gain-staging is more complex. It involves getting a good signal level for each track as it's recorded, which may involve compression or equalisation. This will make the mix easier and may reduce the amount of overall compression which is needed.

We have a few recording tips on our website which you may find useful.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for that info ROG, I want to try and do everything in RB eventually when they get some things sorted like a blue FX on button and nodes!

Hey your profile pic reminds me of Francis Rossi from Status Quo, he's doing supermarket ads now "Down Down prices are Down.

Hi SR.

Never noticed it before, but yes, you do have a point!

Did I ever thank you properly for the blue FX button? The nodes may be harder to fix.

The tracks window track modules can be easily changed in appearance, though the size/shape need to remain the same.

I redesigned my track modules long ago. Played with a few 'skins' I made, and eventually quit when it looked like screenshot below. It still looks like this.
As you can see, the blue FX 'on' is a simple graphic change.

If anyone wants to know how, it's changing some 'glyphs' and small bitmaps. No executable or install needed.
Rename the correct PT/RB image folder and make the ones you want in a new folder with the right name. I think I posted how a few years back on this forum.
Start here
X:\RealBand\PTW_Pictures\Skins\Default\Arranger_Window
Do NOT change the size/name of any of the images. To revert back just rename the original folder back.

... also I did a drawing of the routing options and FX use in RB a while back (again on this forum). I'll see if I can find it.
It helps explain how the signal paths can work in RB. I agree with above that the A1 output is likely the best spot for your description.
