Panning everything either FAR Left, Far Right or Center; meaning if you have a guitar and piano the piano goes to the far left (subjective) the guitar to far right(subjective). Let me know if you use this type of panning?

I use to do this a lot and my late brother, a producer, discouraged it advising that it was better to partial pan and use the entire landscape rather than just have bushes around the perimeter.

Conversely, I recently purchased the ReThink Mixing course from The Recording Revolution and Graham Cochran teaches that the wider stereo image that results from LRC panning is the latest thing in the pro mixes.

My brother's advice comes from the 80-90's era and The Recording Revolution advise is current to today. It likely indicates a change between the times. I always liked LRC and use it more now after several decades of abandoning it.

I've tried it several times Robert. Even as recently as the last song I mixed. I started the mix panning LCR with every intention of doing the song that way. In the end I went back to a more familiar stereo spread. It really depends on how you like the LCR sound on your song. Personally, I think LCR sounds better in mono - if you think your song is going to get a lot of mono play. (Of course check any mix in mono too.) Also many of the LCR mixers fudge and put percussion or something in the side holes. jmho ymmv

Mostly it's 20% panning.

The only time I use 100% is for doubling and thickening

I use panning within BIAB to taste for song development.

No panning - everything flat and centered - for export to a DAW for mixing.

For live performance here is what I do.
Bass hard left
Guitar/Piano hard right
Drums center
BIAB created solos or background strings, organ center

I do it this way because I have a a stereo Input on my Fender Passport and the R/L volumes (bass & guitar) Can be adjusted to suit the room.

Hi Robert.
I use it on the vocal only. One track center one left one right. Effects on the outside tracks only and much less spread for the backings. My idea here is to use up all the panning space available. Cheers.

Bass, drums, and lead vocals should be centered 99% of the time. These 3 are the core of the song and need to be centered. Other things can be centered as well..... but those 3 are the foundation to the song and sound best when in the center.

Drums can be stereo but even when they are.... the main signal is centered so that they appear in both sides, balanced.

Most other instruments and vocals can be panned 20% or more...to taste.

Wide extreme panning should be used carefully and when you are doubling for thickening or specifically going for a special effect.

Do a mono test to be sure you don't have phase issues. (if you are placing the songs in film & tv libraries)

I use panning to make the mix sound right to me.

I often pan the drums and bass opposite and a little off-center, no more than 20%. In my mind I'm creating some space for vocals, and I read about pro engineers doing that, but I don't know that it really makes any difference:)

Once I'm happy with panning and other mix dynamics, I usually put a Stereo Imaging plugin on the Music Bus or on the Entire Mix Bus and experiment, adjust to taste.

Ozone has one and there's one bundled with Sonar.

(I've dabbled in Mid-Side processing a few times too. Waves Center is popular for that kind of technique.)

I wouldn't usually pan anything at extremes, however, in the final mix (whether that's in BiaB, RB or my favorite DAW), I might create some separation with a moderate amount of panning. This is particularly true if I have say two guitar backing tracks in the mix - pan one a little left and the other a little right to get a nice stereo separation effect. Sometimes put a little reverb on one of the guitars too adds to the separation.
