Is there a global setting in BIAB that will temporarily output all tracks, both MIDI and Real, in mono? This will be a periodic setting so changing each song is not desirable.
From the laptop audio jack, a stereo cable plugs into the L/R input channels on the mixer. From the mixer, only one speaker is to be used. A TRS cable runs from the L (mono) output on the mixer to the speaker.
I don't understand what the L (mono)on the mixer means. Does it sum any stereo signal into the one output?
I figure the sure solution is to make sure the BIAB signal from the laptop is mono. Am I thinking correctly or is it overkill?
Thanks for any help Rachael

Normally, if only the connection labeled Left/MONO is used (nothing connected to the Right output), then yes the mixer combines L/R to that one output. YMMV, not knowing the mixer being used, but that is normal behavior for a lot of mixers, especially if labeled that way.
Some older ones may require a MONO setting elsewhere on the mixer. Often a simple button.
Test it and see if you can hear an instrument panned hard right through the speaker ...

Rharv,
Thanks for the reply. My original post was incorrect when I said the mixer had a L (mono) output. I was thinking about my keyboard amp. The mixer, an Alesis MultiMix-8FX, has no such labeled output. However the manual references when using mono sources, they should be connected only to the left channel. Thus my confusion.
You were correct about the L (mono) label. On the keyboard amp, the L (mono) output is combined into mono. On the mixer, however, only the left channel can be heard - not both combined. And there is no switch to convert stereo to mono.
So back to the original question of whether BIAB can output in mono? I explored my Windows (Vista) setup for an option but nothing there either.
Thanks R

You need an adapter. The output from your PC is stereo. You need a stereo to mono adapter plug which plugs into your mixer or amp.

Hi Rachel, I don't know if this will help but it might... Under the "GM" menu, there's an option to "Set panning to mono". This would need to be done on a song-by-song basis, though, and is not a general setting (as far as I can see, at least). Also, under "Prefs | Channels", it's possible to set panning to zero. Again this seems to be song-by-song, though. Lastly, under "Prefs | Overrides", it's possible to deactivate loading panning with songs. I haven't yet tried this but it may well leave panning centred and thus mono. At first glance, this seems to be a global setting. Regards, Noel

If you have two empty mono channels on your mixer, you could plug into those and then pan both channels to the left.
This, of course, is not doable if you're using all of the channels on the mixer.
Hope this helps, Dan

That's how I'd likely do it ^ Just use two inputs on the mixer and pan them both to the Left output if you can't find a MONO setting. Simple, Effective, Fool Proof SEFP! A new acronym ©rharv

I think a temporary Global Mono setting would be a great feature.
Often when I mix, I mix in mono because if the mix works in mono, it will sound even better in stereo.
If the mix works in stereo, it won't necessarily work in mono.
So I mix the old fashioned way, in mono, on both low-fi and hi-fi speakers.
