I try to disconnect my computer from internet access when I ‘m away because I’ve had so many problems but last night I forgot and sure enough Microsoft updated my vista OS with a new creative x-fi update for audio card and did an auto restart – not BIAb and PT play off key—pitch seems to be raised by about ¾ a whole step – its not at any standard pitch. A is close to Bb but not quite there. I tried to tune the soundcard and although the test said tuning would work it wouldn’t work. Also, BIAb crashes when I try to select a midi output other than Microsoft midi.

Anyone have any quick fix

Let me guess that the update changed the creative card back to 48,000 sample rate from 44,100, check and reconfigure if so.

just to update if anyone else has this problem, I reset the sampling and all that but nothing worked and I ended up doing a complete restore from a backup image which of course fixed it. I have had to resort to complete restores often lately. I am sure many never experience problems that mysteriously appear but for those that do it is best to disable auto updates, disable internet access ( because I will tell you occassionally microsoft will turn back on the auto update feature by itself and you're off to the races with some bs install) , always make both a system restore image ( with third party software if you can afford it) AND a complete disk image, doublechecked to make sure its not corrupted, before installing a new app, doing an update , or changing a potentially serious setting.

My philosophy, after many manyhours of stress and frustration, is that if it works dont fix it-- and if you can get everything running correctly and can afford it buy the best drive image software you can get and an extra drive and make multiple backups, and check your backups often for corruptuion as they have a tendency to become corrupted over time.

then when you system goes crazy, as it eventually will, you can resote the drive rather than spending a million hours searching forums and contacting support.

Also, I have a dell xps running vista 32 and a creative SB X-FI card , and its been nothing but trouble from day 1. I hate creative products, or at least those that come installed on dell machines. The new update really did make the midi sounds out of tune with no obvious way to correct the problem.

Just my 2 cents.

Probably creating some protest here form some people, but well I don't like Dell, Creative and Vista, let alone the combination of that all...

We have over fifty customers running Vista 32 with Creative X-Fi Xtreme Gamer with absolutely no problems - but none using Dell which is rated as a good average machine

If Dell have installed only the X-Fi Audio/Music card then that could be a part of the problem

I have the latest Vista upgrades working fine and a few of my colleagues are using Vista 32 SP2 RC with no problems

With Vista 32 it is even more important to have the very latest and compatible drivers - to download and install them with all virus and spyware programs temporary disabled - when install is complete closedown and reboot

It sounds as though Beatlejohn has some deep problems that need investigation

Oh if that was a reaction to my ideas hehe, it was not as any backup of the problems mentioned or what so ever, I just dislike those three in a row for my own reasons. Not going to explain here, it will be a long story, but well it was just a personal note, and as I said, it was going to provoke some "antivotes" to my opinion. hehe

No big deal - It was a reply from my experience - not a reaction

You obviously have had problems with the three - I was just posting another experience to try to get to the real cause of the problems with the original poster

No one wants to set off an opinion war. The crazy thing about computers is that two people can get the same basic machine,, and due to unique configurations and use have completely different results. Our office manager told me he had to rebuild his hard drive ( he had no backup) due to a microsoft auto install- restart. Its really not so much dell and probably not so much creative as it is microsoft-- vista was a huge turkey from the get go. If 7 doesnt get any better I think there'll be a revolt. But beware the new "digital rights management" features in windows 7 -- talk about creating some unintended consequences!

I may have some deep problems but when I restore if I can manage to keep microsofts automatic tinkering at bay everything works fine, perfectly as far as I can tell. BIAB plays flawlessly, real tracks and all.

Thanks to all who contribute to questions here because sometimes it really makes the differnce between success and failure. I have put the experinces I have had only to hopefully save people my hours of learning the hard way. IF you'er not backing up your drive you are on the road to disaster!
