How about being able to write 8 or 10 string tabs for lap steel guitars with different tunings

Hi WineRider,

Welcome to the forum. I find your request for lap steel tablature interesting. Would the tablature need to take into account the multitude of lap steel tunings in addition to the number of strings?

Difficult task, even tho' it appears much easier on first sight for lap steel than for pedal steel.

If PGMusic has a software module to convert notes into numbers then I see a possibility. I see that possibility with a large "BUT". There is always the difficulty of the playability of such a tablature.

While on a pedal steel you almost never (!) slant the steel bar it is common for lap steel players. Without slanting the steel bar, all notes of a single instance -- single note or notes with harmony and chords -- are played on the same fret, (with a pedal steel you also have to have an information which pedal...) still it is all on the same fret.

To give the relevant slanting information it is also important where on the fretboard you will slant the bar. The same harmony might not be achievable at some of all the possible areas on your fret. Another complication is the tuning. What is possible with one tuning might not be possible with another. That exactly is the difficult task.

Back then, when I played pedal steel, I used regular notation, but enjoyed a tab every now and then for some crowded areas on the staff.

OK the question has elicited comments. I have some other software where you can change the tuning to suit what you want, but this software also lets us lap steelies down in only working with 6 strings. I don't mind being able to just do dots and the transpose it myself to tabs...I'm still not clever enough to play from the dots...old age and a lousy memory, just don't cut the mustard these days.
I really thought it would not be too difficult...I am now wiser. When using BiaB I can get a score for pedal steel..OK so far, but it is just a score and it is not easy to sort it out for Lap Steel. Am I asking the impssible? If a score can be produced for the Pedal Steel why not for a Lap Steel, we could then transpose, alter key signatures to suit.

Is this where the S--t hits the fan? I love my BiaB and it has far more than I could ever use, but "JUST NO LAP STEEL" even on real tracks, It's pointless me doing anything 'cos I am the proverbial c--p player, but if there is a pro or good lap steelie out there...any chance of some User Tracks?

Maurice,

The nice thing about posting a wishlist request is all requests are only limited by past experiences and our imagination. Just because it is difficult to fullfill or implement a request doesn't mean it will not be fullfilled. I have no way of knowing PG Music's future plans.

At the very least you have made many people aware there is a difference between lap and pedal steel guitar and that there are six, eight and ten string versions of lap steel.

Perhaps your request will be the inspiration for PG Music to create some lap steel RealTracks.

Please do not think I was saying you made a bad request. All requests are valid and worthy of consideration.

Not only that -- it would be cool to have some lap steel RealTracks -- in both major sound versions:
1. Hawaiian steel guitar (a la Jerry Byrd for instance)
2. C&W/Western Swing lap steel guiar (a la cindy Cashdollar for instance)

(I have given just one example, I could give many more.)

For those who are really familiar with the nuances of the sound of a steel guitar, they can distinguish between the sound of a steel guitar with pedals used and the one without pedals used.

Some players are noted here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lap_steel_guitar. Many on these list I would not have named as "notable", but somebody else has, and some very notable are missing (Where are Herb Remington, Leon McAuliffe, and Bob Dunn?).

I have added a request on the RealTracks wishlist for lap steel RealTracks.

You might want to second that wish.

Tabledit goes up to 12 strings.

Check out Musescore not sure where they are up to, but there was talk about Lap/Pedal.

Thanks for the info SolidRock, I have TablEdit but it isn't intuative to me...I'm a dumbo...I have click tab as well and I find they do not transfer to other mediums such as BiaB. I use BiaB as backing (Real Tracks prefered) but it means I have to make all my tabs or scores seperate from BiaB and play/record. I was after something in BiaB that would enable me to do score/tabs in it with my C6th 8 string tuning. To be honest I don't even know if what I am asking for is even feasable.

Gooten Tag GHinCH,

Thanks for the interest and the request, I'll 2nd it when I can find where to. But in the meantime I appreciate the interest in my request. Coming back to music after 40 years doesn't help in the grey matter area, but I have built my own lap steels, 2 6 string and 1 8 string. It's the 8 in my avatar.
they are all on www.winerider.com/guitars.html

hey, your website has some cool information.

I used to play pedal steel in the late 1970s into the early 1980s. I still have my steel but don*t play anymore.

Thanks for visiting my site, as you can see a lot of water has gone under my bridge, and Osteoarthritis is not too kind at the moment. Still life's for living and enjoying...I do that and possibly upset the neighbours into the bargain, making a sound I call music, but I think they might disagree. When I start all the mice in the region pack their bags and depart.
