I'm looking at biab on sale for $99.us. How complete is it? how much deeper is the next version for $199.us? (Sweetwater prices)

PRO is pretty basic.
You get the full working software of course but there are fewer RTs etc, as you might expect. Mega pack has lots more of all types and so on.
Look in the headers here at Band In A Box for Wndows and compare them all. Serious users go Ultra or Everything but you can start small, gain expertise and build up. It's all about your wallet!
Oh BTW - IF you DO buy PRO, in December PG always brings out latest BIAB (2016) at fairly healthy discounts. Maybe upgrade then? Its what I did.

The price difference is in how many additional styles, RealTracks, RealDrums, supermidi instruments, etc that you get.
Look at the pricing and feature comparison on the PGMusic BIAB product page to see what you get with each PAK.
Without knowing the details, I suspect the $99 package is the ProPAK, which is just the BIAB program with a sampling of styles. It's really too give you an idea of whether you like the program or not. If you end up using the program seriously, you're going to want the additional styles and RealTracks.

By the way, those are good answers you already received. I thought I would just clarify that the main BIAB program is the same in all versions; the only difference in what you buy is how many extras you get. Even for the audiophile version (CD quality tracks) the main program is the same.

I believe that tariffs and local taxes only apply when shipped outside of North America. As Matt indicated, and I should have included that yes, the program itself is the same regardless of which PAK you purchase. The differences come down to how many different styles and RealInstruments are available to you when you use the program. Think of it like when you purchase a graphics program, where the higher priced versions use the same base application, but have additional clipart available to you. But for BIAB, it's in the available sounds versus the visuals. You can click here to see the pricing and content chart. Just be aware that for the Windows version, a new version typically comes out in time for Christmas, so if you purchase today, you'll be looking to upgrade in a few months to the latest version. I don't want to dissuade you, because you can get a lot done in a few months, but it's just something to be aware of.

I looked at this line and used it to decide where I wanted to get in. I need steel guitar so I bought the level that had them. I have since, upgraded and now have the Everything pak and have never regretted paying the cost for it. I get the update every year as well.... there's always something new in the upgrades.

If I remember last year there was no discount for first time buyers, but I think people got around this by buying the pro pak first and then simply buying the upgrade, to the ultra pak, means usually that you get the whole shebang including all realtracks for probably around $250 in total.

Of course there's no absolute guarantee that there will be a Xmas Sale. Historically, PGM have never advertised any forthcoming sale by providing advance notice, but by the same token, there usually is one in November / December.
It might actually be a bit later this year, while they cram in all those great ideas from the wishlist <hint>
(There used to also be a mid year upgrade sale, but this seems to now be directed to the Mac release rather than a year.5 upgrade)

Musiclover Quite so. Paying $99 for a working BIAB with SOMETHING of everything will quickly let you see if you like BIAB or not and if you hate the darned thing its only $99 lost. AND - IF there is a SaleSaleSale (betcha there is  ) then an upgrade will cost less. Ian

musiclover's comments are right on. I bought the pro version last year for about $99 to try it out and then upgraded to the UltraPlusPak during the Christmas sale for $159, so all in it was $258 - a substantial savings over the regular retail price.

There's a 30 day MONEY BACK guarantee.... so buy the highest level you can afford.
If you buy in at the bottom, you don't get many of the good real tracks. If you use Band in a Box (BB) without the real tracks you may be very disappointed since it WILL be using midi tracks and synths to do the music.
Many of the styles are based totally on midi and ...well this is my opinion..... I hate the way they sound and never use them. I use the BB styles that are the real track based styles. They sound better and they tend to be in the higher up versions.
Remember the 30 day refund. However, chances are really really good, that if you buy "up the food chain" a bit.... or heck... go for the gusto and get the Everything pak on hard drive, after you use it for a few days, you will NOT return it for the refund. It's THAT good.
