Upgraded my laptop from Win 7 to Win 10, reinstalled BB to run from BB external HD, but there are no Real Sounds to be heard only MIDI.

My output driver is set to MS GS Wavetable Synth and Synthesizer to General MIDI instr.

What am I overlooking?

That output driver is for MIDI only. In Preferences, RealTracks, you need to specify a custom location for your RealTracks. Likely do the same in Preferences, RealDrums.

Although it's working, you should think about a better MIDI sound source, too. Let us know if you would like some help.

Mat,

Thanks for getting back to me!

In fact I was using a Roland SD-50 (that worked perfectly under WIN 7), when I noticed that only the MIDI tracks were heard. As “roland.com” had promised the win 10 driver was installed automatically as soon as the unit was connected to my laptop.

So in order to check on this problem, I bypassed the SD-50 with exactly the same results, as described in my posting earlier today.

Exactly what I need to do; “to specify a custom location for your RealTracks. Likely do the same in Preferences, RealDrums”?

Hope you can help me.

I hope you get the SD-50 working. It's one of the few Roland synths I didn't use, but the demos sounded great.

Sorry I didn't give more exact directions, as I was not in front of a BIAB computer at the time. You said you reinstalled BIAB to run from the external hard drive. I'm assuming that means you had previously installed BIAB to your internal drive. If so, what you selected in the new install from Setup.exe should have allowed you to specify where the RealTracks and RealDrums are. Even so, you can check, and if needed, change where they are:

Opt., Preferences, RealTracks.
Put a check in the box for "Use a Custom Folder Location for the RealTracks".
In the box directly below, type the path of the RealTracks (or use the file folder icon to locate it).
For example, mine says G:\bb\RealTracks\

Then do the same thing for Opt., Preferences, RealDrums.
For example, mine says G:\bb\Drums\

Matt,
Thanks for the detailed info!
I did had the SD-50 working, before my update to WIN 10 and it does indeed sound great.

I reinstalled BIAB (running from external hard drive), just to be sure it was properly installed under WIN 10.
When it was installed, it continued to install REAL instr. and drums, something I cannot remember I had seen before.

I have followed your directions concerning were the real instr. and drums are located (F in my case). When I use the Audio Driver Setup I can hear the piano scale from the SD-50, however when playing back a song, I still can only hear the MIDI sounds.
Under the Synth/Soundcard I have selected “General MIDI Instrument Misc.”

Do you have more tips?
Thanks,
Tonnie

If you know where the RealTracks and RealDrums are, and you have correctly pointed to them, then I'm not sure what's going on. Have you checked your audio mixer levels, and of course make sure the audio isn't muted? On a PC, double-click on the little speaker icon in the far lower right of the screen and check.

Matt,
Thanks again for taking the time to answer me, it is highly appreciated!!!!!

The Realtracks and RealDrums correctly pointed to and in the mixer window I can see all the sounds being played back correctly and a normal sound level. So the audio mixer levels are OK, also the speakers are at 80%, so I should be able to hear the non-MIDI sounds from my speakers, but I don’t.

As a test I have connected the SD-50 to one of my other (WIN 7) laptops, after installing the SD-50 WIN 7 driver and there it worked perfectly!!!!!
So perhaps it is something outside of BB, like e.g. the WIN 10 driver for the SD-50?

If you have no other suggestions, I will ctc. BB support, but I had thought somebody else might have run into the same problem and thereby killing two birds with one stone.

Brgds,
Tonnie

I got a reply from support that helped!

"You'll also want to select the SD-50 as your audio driver. In Band-in-a-Box go to Opt | Preferences | Audio and change your driver type to ASIO. Then select the SD-50 as your ASIO device, check the box for ASIO Always On and hit OK. That should ensure that you're sending all the audio to the SD-50 in addition to all your MIDI data."

After I did this, I found I still had to do one more thing:

At first, I only got the Real Instrument & Drum sounds, so I went to the Driver Wizard Piano Test, which also was also silent. After checking to "Use my external MIDI module ...." and selecting the SD-50 did I get the Piano Test to work and after that I returned to playing a song and everything was there!
