It was probably a mistake in the long run but when I got my last version of biab audiophile I turned of software update on my pc. some of that was founded in ignorance, thinking there was a virus for my pc everywhere.
I've always used macs till my last version of biab. So I browsed with great abandon. Never a problem.
I'm thinking some of my problems with this version of audiophile [`15 ] might due to lack of updates. It remembers none of the changes I make in the mixer area re levels, what is muted, master volume, reverb, EQ.
I do not like the DESPERATE nature of the various antivirus software that has spent a very short time in my pc. Same goes to microsoft. Hence the reluctance to update.
They are all in my face all the time trying to justify their existance. I'm going to take it to someone who I'm told is very good with pc's.
Is is possible for a person to update from trusted sites with no anti virus permanently installed in my pc? Also in past versions there used to be a build number in the help menu. Where is that info these days please? Lastly, what should I ask him not to update or add to my software?
Thanks for your time.
Ron

Try http://www.sandboxie.com/ you can keep using it for free, just have to wait a few secs, it will encapsulate your browser in a sandbox, you can also right click on an exe file > Run Sandboxed. Any file that you download will ask if you want to recover it. Any spyware or tools bars etc.. will stay in the sandbox, you can then delete the sandbox regularly. Avira Free is ok just don't upgrade when it recommends. How It WorksSandboxie runs your programs in an isolated space which prevents them from making permanent changes to other programs and data in your computer. The red arrows indicate changes flowing from a running program into your computer. The box labeled Hard disk (no sandbox) shows changes by a program running normally. The box labeled Hard disk (with sandbox) shows changes by a program running under Sandboxie. The animation illustrates that Sandboxie is able to intercept the changes and isolate them within a sandbox, depicted as a yellow rectangle. It also illustrates that grouping the changes together makes it easy to delete all of them at once.

My computer is totally off line. No internet connection and therefore, no updates to anything. If PG releases a new update to fix bugs, and it's something I think I need, I will DL it to another machine and use a USB stick to scan and then transfer it. My current 2015 BB is factory fresh... no updates. It works fine.
I've never seen a popup telling me BiaB was trying to update, and quite honestly, being off line is intentional. I don't want updates to anything.
Once I set the computer up and got everything running properly, efficiently and smoothly, why would I want an update to something to screw that up?
Nope.... no updates. And as result, the computer/DAW runs just as fast and solidly as it did the day I installed the software. I connect to the internet ONLY if I add a new program that needs to activate via the internet. Off line activation is a PITA. Once activated, the internet wire gets unplugged.
I have no firewall and no AV software on the DAW. All incoming audio files come in to a computer which does have that protection.
If you stay connected to the internet, you need the AV/FW software on and running. If you have issues that seem to be virus related, you need to get the computer cleaned. It's possible you picked up some mal-ware and that stuff is a PITA as well. Not as bad as a virus, but still bad and very bothersome.

Seems a good way to try out programs Solidrock, I have downloaded it before but as it seemed rather complicated I sort of gave it a miss. Now you have got me thinking again I should try it. Just downloaded it and updated Ccleaner to see how it works. Once I run and install the program within the sancbox, Can I then just run outside the sandbox, or I have to reinstall it again? Seems Ccleaner needs updating again outside of sandbox. Thanks Musiclover

Yes CC needs to be running on the main drive to work. If you run a program installer it will install in the sandbox drive and always run from there. Once you have run a program and know it's safe then you can install it without using sandboxie, same with an exe file you are not sure of, run sandboxed make sure it's what it says it is then run it normally. If you go to the C:\sandboxie and look it there it is like another drive with Program Files folder etc. If you get any crap just delete the sandbox. Ideally what GH Herb does is the way to go, but this might be the second best if you just have the one machine. You can also use VirtualBox as a sacrificial OS, once installed and setup you make a copy of the virtual machine image, any crap just delete the OS (image) and replace it with a fresh clone copy. You can just transfer safe files thru a usb stick.

As regards a computer being offline great if you are not too bothered about auditioning some of the style or maybe even realtracks, as a lot require an internet connection in biab.
Thanks for the tip about sandboxie. I will definitely have a go at it. I take it if downloading an exe that I am not sure of, I would probably have to install an antivirus and antimalwarebytes in the sandbox drive as well to scan them?
I do have virtualization on my computer with VMware player, I have windows xp installed. My main OS is windows 7 32 bit.
Xp runs a little slow there in the guest OS, I just use it mainly to run a little game called The Farm an old windows 95 game that my seven year old loves. runs ok there.
Strange thing though it will run ok in windows 7 as well, but without sound, but switch on my fast track pro and hey presto we have sound.
Strange really and I have tried everything to get sound on it with windows 7, but it will only have sound with the m-audio fast track pro on.

You can just go to the sandbox drive right click on the downloaded exe > Scan with Anti Virus. Is that 95 game DOS as you can use DOSBox. Or right click properties Compatibility > Win95 or try and change the sound card in VM to SoundBlaster or something else. or in XP you might of been here and done that: Sound in a Windows XP or Windows .NET Server Guest Click the Printers and Other Hardware link in the Windows XP or Windows .NET Server Control Panel (Start > Control Panel). In the See Also pane, click Add Hardware, then click Next. Select Yes, I have already connected the hardware, then click Next. In the Installed Hardware list, select Add a new hardware device, then click Next. Select Install the hardware that I manually select from a list (Advanced), then click Next. Select Sound, video and game controllers, then click Next. Select Creative Technology Ltd. in the Manufacturer list and Sound Blaster 16 or AWE32 or compatible (WDM) in the list of devices, then click Next. Click Next. Click Finish. or it might work thru one of these http://vb-audio.pagesperso-orange.fr/Cable/index.htm

can't speak to audiophile updates or issues with same.
But EVEN if PC OR even Mac is not used on the internet, or not even connected to internet it is foolish to not have some basic antivirus/anit-malware installed.
A few less obnoxious are Malwarebytes FREE Anti-Malware and AVG's FREE antivirus - there ARE others.
At some point you WILL transfer files, via of some form OF media (CD, DVD, USB Flash, over closed internal ethernet, mind meld??) and it should always, ALWAYS be checked one last time BEFORE it is allowed into/onto the PC OR MAC.
ALSO the sandbox thing mentioned above is ALWAYS a good idea before running anything unknown and untrusted.
Where I work (actually past tense work - now "on call" semi-retired) it was in one of those places where our networks NEVER touched the outside world. Even then all USB ports and all optical drives - were disabled (so folks couldn't put stuff on and cause a problem, or remove stuff from the network that they shouldn't).
Any and ALL files that came in to the facility had to be antivirus/anit-malware pre-scanned on a SEPARATE PC, then an administrator installed or copied that information or program to that closed network (with witnesses). Ditto leaving the facilities.
So at home I've become very, very good at isolation and taking prophylactic measures.
Good luck Larry

202 New RealTracks Released with Band-in-a-Box 2026!
With Band-in-a-Box® 2026, we've released 202 incredible new RealTracks (in sets 468-488) in a variety of genres—featuring your most requested styles!
Jazz, Funk & World (Sets 468-475):
Our new jazz, funk & blues RealTracks include a groovin’ collection of RealTracks and RealDrums! These include more requested “soul jazz” RealTracks featuring artists Neil Swainson (bass), Charles Treadway (organ), Brent Mason (guitar), and Wes Little (drums). There are new “smooth jazz” styles (4), which include a RealTracks first: muted trumpet, as well as slick new smooth jazz brushes options for drums. Blues lovers will be thrilled—there are more “classic acoustic blues” styles, including guitar (5), bass (4), and drums (10) with blues master Colin Linden, featuring understated and tasty background acoustic soloing, plus brushes drums and acoustic bass. There are also new electric blues RealTracks, including electric blues with PG favorite Johnny Hiland (3) and soulful electric slide guitar from Colin Linden (4). If you love funk & gospel, there are great new options this year, including gospel organ (3) from Charles Treadway, as well as new funk, tango, and rock ’n’ roll drums (3) and bass (1). And for big, bold arrangements, we have uptempo soul horns (4) featuring a three-part hip horn section with options for a full mix or stems of each individual horn — plus an accompanying rhythm section (4) of drums, bass, guitar, and electric piano!
Rock & Pop (Sets 476–482):
Our new rock & pop RealTracks bring a powerful mix of requested favorites, fresh genres, and modern chart-inspired styles! We have more of our popular “Producer Layered Acoustic Guitars (15)” featuring Band-in-a-Box favorite Brent Mason. We’ve continued our much-requested disco styles (10), and added new Celtic guitar (5) with a more basic, accessible approach than our previous Drop-D or DADGAD offerings. There are also highly requested yacht rock styles (17), inspired by the smooth, polished soft-rock sound of the late ’70s and early ’80s — laid-back grooves, silky electric pianos, warm textures, elegant harmonic movement, and pristine production aesthetics. Fans of heavier styles will love our new glam metal (13), capturing the flashy, high-energy sound of ’80s arena-ready guitar rock. We also have a set of rootsy modern-folk rock (18), with a warm, organic sound combining contemporary folk textures and driving acoustic strumming. And we’ve added lots of new modern pop styles (16) — the kinds of sounds you’re hearing on the radio today, featuring exciting new drums, synths, and cutting-edge RealTracks arrangements.
Country, & Americana (Sets 483–488):
Our new country & Americana RealTracks deliver a rich collection of acoustic, electric, and roots-inspired styles! We have new country pop (9) with legendary guitarist Brent Mason. There is also a potpourri (14) of bouzouki, guitars, banjo, and more, perfect for adding texture and character to contemporary acoustic arrangements. We’ve added funky country guitar (5) with PG favorite Brent Mason, along with classic pedal steel styles (5) featuring steel great Doug Jernigan. There are more country songwriter styles (8) that provide intimate, rootsy foundations for storytelling and modern Americana writing. Finally, we have “background soloing” acoustic guitar (12) with Brent Mason — simpler, but still very tasty acoustic lines designed to sit beautifully behind vocals or act as a subtle standalone solo part.
Check out all the 202 new RealTracks (in sets 468-488)!
And, if you are looking for more, the 2026 49-PAK (for $49) includes an impressive collection of 20 bonus RealTracks, featuring exciting and inspiring additions to add to your RealTracks library. There are also new indie-folk styles with guitar, bass, 6-string bass used as a high-chording instrument, acoustic guitar, and banjo. Plus, dedicated "cymbal fills" RealDrums provide an added layer that work very well with low-key folky styles with other percussion.
